I started gluing together some wood scraps left over from various projects, and it's starting to look like it wants to be a 4-string bass. :D The body is roughed out and I'm trying to decide on the fingerboard wood. I have cocobolo and birdseye maple I could use. I'll post pics with the combinations laid out. What do you all think looks better? Also, is the body shape too boring? Any and all comments welcome!

BTW I'm just a garage hobbyist with no budget, so this project isn't going to be completed anytime soon ;)

  6. It looks good ! But I don't really like the black strip down the front.

The shape is nice, and the birdseye would look very nice!

Keep us updated with the progress... :)

with cocobolo... obviously not cut to size but you can see the color contrast.

Thanks :). The redwood burl I had wasn't wide enough for a full top, so I was making do. The black is wenge veneer about 1/32" thick, so I could actually plane it down to the sapele underneath if I wanted to get rid of it. But I kind of like the contrast, myself.

  11. I prefer the maple over the cocobolo, personally, but either way, looks good for old scraps!

IMO the cocobolo matches better, but I have a preference for maple.

Maple all the way! The maple contrasts very well, in an appealing way, which I like very much. The coco matches well, but I personally like the contrast a lot.

The bass looks really great! My vote is for the birdseye maple all the way!

scrap wood.....? I had in mind a buncha 2x4's stuck together or something.... well, a nice surprise!

That looks really good. Not sure about the fingerboard wood....maple would contrast better though, and look better overall.

the shape is nice, and so is the wood. Can't wait to see it finished!

LOL! :D Hey, it worked for Les Paul!

I should have clarified they are leftover BASS BUILDING scraps :) This will actually be bass number six for me, although spread out over about 20 years.

  17. That looks really nice, good job. I like the maple look better. I also had in mind some old 2x4's or something(i have a friend making a guitar that way). Goodluck with the rest of the build, it looks really great so far, i like the shape a lot.

Thanks everyone for the great comments and encouragement! Maple FB it is. I was leaning that way myself but now I'm convinced :) I'll post some more pics as soon as there are new developments.

I think you should go with the maple board. The cocobolo looks too red or something like that. The maple's contrast is really appealing.

  20. I'd say go with the cocobolo.. The maple fb contrasts too much and reduces the contrast between the woods in the body and the beauty of their grain.
