Merry Christmas to all. I just want to show a photo of my 10 year old son playing my Bacchus Woodline PJ Handmade Series bass live with his friends during a Christmas party. The little girl on keyboard is 8 while the drummer is 12. Although my son is having a formal piano lesson so he can read music, he loves playing bass in his band.
ii na! I love Bucchus basses. Found a cheap Chinese made one at a used store for about $60. Told my friend about it and he bought it. It wasn't setup very well, but after a little work it plays awesome. My other friend with a warwick was impressed. The bar I frequent to play music also has a Bucchus to use. It's also a cheap Chinese one, but everytime I play I'm super impressed.
Yeah, but can they play "YYZ" yet?! Seriously though, that is waaaaaaay cool! Best wishes of good fortune to each and every one of them!
Here is my oldest daughter with her new MTD Kingston bass. She was 12 in this pic. She is now 18.. Man time flies quickly. Love them young and enjoy!!
That's great! You must be proud. That is exactly what I would do, have them study piano and play what they want for fun. In piano you learn to read both bass and treble clef, and study rhythm, melody and harmony. It doesn't get any more comprehensive than that.
Feel that? It's like an icy chill from Alaska pouring all over this display of human warmth, camaraderie and pride in the achievements of our young'uns.
Y'see all that there splendor, son? Someday all this'll be yours. Now put down that gee-tar and get a move on…this driveway isn't gonna shovel itself!
Because we all know music is about becoming great, not having fun... So I guess in your world this young man would be told to put the bass down, not waste time in a frivolous band and stick to his piano instruction. And who ever heard of someone playing multiple instruments well? I stand by my original post, have fun, explore music, be in a band, study music and follow your muse.
Other than you just wanting to pretend something is there -- where, in what I said, did you interpret all this mumbo-jumbo?
Dave Grohl said to be in a garage band and suck, but at least have fun while you suck, then you get better
Okay, I think I see where this is going. I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you didn't mean this quote… …was meant to be taken so negatively. That being said, it didn't take much of a leap of logic for RJC, along with myself and perhaps some others, to interpret it as a severely cold, wet blanket. Doubly so when it came in the midst of all of us basking in the good feelings of showing off kids displaying aptitude and interest in playing music. Kids (like Lauper's girls) wanna have fun, and if they have fun while playing, regardless of their level of mastery, it is a great thing. So, in the context of the thread, and during our warm-fuzzies-mutual-appreciation-fest, telling us, "…playing what you want, for fun, rarely makes you a great player", isn't too far a logical-leap from saying, "Just because you're having fun doesn't mean you're any good." It may not be what you meant to impart, and I'm sure we can all see the truth in your original statement, but dropping it like a loud record-scratch during our collective daaaaaawwww-fest was…and I think I can speak for the OP, as well as the other contributors on this thread…as poorly timed as it was open for mis-interpretation. And to you, @RJC1811…haven't we all had a moment where we inadvertently put one or both shoes in our mouth and proceeded to run a marathon in the attempt to impart fact and/or wisdom? Well, now that I'm done psychoanalyzing the thread and it's constituent posters, can't we all just agree to make amends, get along and be cool with each other on this most merry of holidays… …for da childwen?! :***:
