My trip to Guitar Center

  1. So, bassmonkeee and me go to Guitar Center this morning. They've got a no payments/no interest 'till 2003 deal going on, and I need a portable backup rig. Who knew.. I'd be walking out with a new/used bass, too![IMG]
I'm trying out the SWR Workingman's 15, which I ended up buying, and bassmonkeee comes walkin' over with this Ovation Magnum bass from the '70s. You've probably seen one of these; it's got a wacky shape, weird-looking bridge, lots of knobs, etc. And, this one was outfitted with flatwounds. Well, I plugged it in and it was instant, old-school, killer tone. It played great, too: no buzzing and the neck and frets are in excellent shape. The coolest feature of the bass is the mute switch on the bridge. You can raise the mutes up halfway and it makes the bass sound like you're plugged into some kind of outer space pedal!
It was a no-brainer, clearly, but I still had to call the boss. She balked at first, but then she bailed me out by suggesting that she could give it to me for Christmas. And this works out great for her, because I saved her the shopping trip, she wound up getting me a great present, and -- because I bought it with the amp -- I got to roll the price of the bass into my 12-month free financing deal. The bass itself cost $279, by the way. The only hitch is, the wife says the bass is going in the closet until Christmas day. You gotta give a little to get a little, I guess.:)
So, all in all, a very fruitful trip to GC. And, do I have a great wife, or what?[IMG]

Good job, Dave. The "early Christmas present" thing has worked well for me over the years! I'm shopping for a combo, too. Let us know what you think of the SWR.

That's a pretty good price for that bass. Didn't know you were a Danny Partridge fan, too;)

Dave, I played that bass. It is pretty cool.
Hey Brad, "baaa ba, ba, ba ba ba ba baaaaa ba."

  5. Merry Christmas, sounds very cool and right up your alley. Should be a good compliment to the Reverend.

Did ya'll hit the Mars 10% off sale too? I did the loop, but didn't get anything exciting. Mars (got a little fold up ultimate stand) to Atlanta Discount (George L cables for efx loop, demo Berg 12 again  ) to GC (check on used small cabs, say hey to Rob and drool on the Smith and Fodera 4's :D). Man, they need to expand that bass room, they're getting a pretty big selection of primo stuff, buncha new Zons, that spalted Fodera and probably more that I missed.

  6. You lucky dawg,you!!!!:p

I`ll most likely get socks for Christmas again.*sigh*

  7. Rob made me the deal on the bass! A cool cat, indeed. I played that Zon Sonus Studio 5 again, with the satin finish on the back of the neck.. yowza! Great bass.

I'm lucky Dave bought the Ovation. I told him if he didn't buy it, I would. And, I couldn't afford it at the time. A new bass would equal death. And, now, I still get to use it to record. :D
