You'll need some sort of interface. There are some good USB interfaces that will work well. They can range in price fairly heavily. I would say in the $200 range is a good place to go, plus/minus about $50, if you're looking to do some more serious stuff. Otherwise, around $100 is good for just fooling around. You can always upgrade gear later.

    Here are some I like:
M-Audio Fast Track MKII USB Audio Interface: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend
M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend
Line 6 Line 6 Pod Studio UX1 with Pod Farm: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend
PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Probably just foolin' around. I have never really thought about buying something like this, and it was a surprise. My wife is pretty cool.
