    generally speaking there will be two volume and two tone controls, a set for each pickup

    The standard Gibson style three way toggle with separate tone and volume controls works great for guitar. You can set one pickup's tone and volume for a rhythm sound, set the other PUP for a lead sound, and simply hit the switch.
