Got this rig 4 months ago. I finally completed it's rehab 7/2, and it's now in tip top shape performance wise and looks wise. When I got it, the head didn't work and was missing the mounting apparutus. The cab was missing the rear panel (meaning no jack,) one handle, the dolly and various screws. The entire cab had been lined with a layer of Styrofoam with the insulation gone or deteriorated. The head went to Alpha Sound and was gone through by Al Forbes and Buddy Bost, the amp masters. I made a new back panel and installed a period correct jack plate, jack and screws. Did the same for the back panel. Note that all screws and bolts were slotted rather than Phillips. Took some doing, put I managed to find replacements in slotted screws. I found some identical tolex and glued it to the back panel. The speakers were original, but I wanted to preserve those, so I installed some sweet JBL K140's. I rewired those with the correct white and black cloth speaker wire. I got rid of the dumb styrofoam and replaced the insulation. Put it back together and tested. Horrible rattles all over the cab. Long story short, I doubled the bracing screws and added a middle support bar to tighten up the middle of the back panel. Several hours later, success! It's now rattle and vibration free, even driving it with a 350 Ampeg SVT. A ton of work and then some, but the results are awesome. Here you go,
beautiful!!! i had a 65 thunderbass and 69 guild thunderstar (1x15 version of your cab w/ jbl d140) and it was a great rig. wonderful punchy tube tone. i've always loved those Guild 2 tone grill cloth. They're the only ones that did that, so funky.
They are quite unique and cool. I was very fortunate that the grill cloth was in excellent condition just needing a cleaning. I have some D140's that I was going to put in it, but discovered that one of them had issues. The K's sound super though.
They were always great sounding rigs and with all the work you just did I'm sure yours is exceptional. The workmanship/craftsmanship jumps off the page in those pictures.
I believe they are 8417 and the original ones to the best of my memory at the moment. I know that they are not 6L6.
Thanks. Pretty impressive for 50 watts, even going with the bass controls cranked 3/4 . The JBL's can give some thump or go to the classic mode.
