I'm considering buying a used bass on ebay. It has a natural wood finish. I don't know anything about finishes.

Are there any significant differences in finishes that I should know about? Do some require more maintenance than others? Do some protect the guitar better than others?

not in my experience. the Ibanez i had had a natural finish. it was just clear laquer over the wood, i guess. i think natural finishes are nice because dents in the wood are harder to see.

The bass is twenty years old. It doesn't appear to have a lacquer finish or any type of 'hard' coat finish.

Might be an oil finish. They're not really hard to maintain. Wipe them down now and again and that's all you need.
