Got my first American instrument today, a 2004 (or 2005) Fender Highway 1 Jazz Bass in 3-Color Sunburst. This baby has a LOT of nicks, dings, and scratches, and even a chip, but I love the overall vintage vibe that this gives. Check that satin lacquer finish: The neck is thicker and rounder (and more of a C shape) than my MIM Deluxe PJ and the Player Series Jazz Bass, which are both more of a “D” shape. The tuners and the truss rod turn so smoothly. Speaking of smooth, the fret edges seem to not even exist... I immediately put a set of DR Lo-Riders I had lying around, only to realize I much prefer the Hi-Beams. And last but not least, the vintage saddle bridge is going to make way for a Hipshot KickAss. I’m looking forward to putting this through its paces.
Very pretty! Question(s)... My eyes leapt to this right away. Is it the camera angle, or does the pickguard really not line up with the control plate? I expect this on my El Cheapo jazzes, but don't expect it on a "high end" Fender. Is this normal for the Highway 1s? Maybe I'm too nitpicky. Is my nitpickyness making me see issues that aren't there?
That's one of the better ones I'd say and all part of the hit or miss recipe for "7ender magic mojo". To be honest, that area is difficult for a bevelled scratchplate to line up with exactly and I have seen worse and better. However, if that's the worst problem this 7ender's got, I'd consider that a small blessing.
Nice! You should call it Christine. The Highway 1s weren't high-end Fenders, if I remember correctly.
It's just me, then. That's OK. Really! It is! I already know I'm more "uptight" about some things than others, so it's good to demarcate another "boundary."
nice find, OP! sounds like it ticks some of your boxes --- and you describe it as a real player for you --- great stuff! congratulations on your new instrument!
It is misaligned, but I think partly because the pickguard might’ve shrunk a bit. In any case, I was gonna swap it with tort anyway! Or maybe no pickguard...if there aren’t any holes underneath (haven’t checked yet).
To the OP, Nice bass enjoy it. I always liked the Highway One series, especially the satin finish. To Volker, I had a pickguard/control Plate issue like that with a Custom Shop Custom Classic Jazz Bass that I waited 9 months for. Also had swirling in the clear finish. That was a few of the reasons why I play Sadowskys now.
Does anybody know how much they went for back in ‘03-‘05? Before the Highway One revamp came out, because I’m pretty sure they were discounted after ‘06 or something.
