I was looking for a different sound for the 70’s rock band I recently joined and found this online at GC and couldn’t be happier for my $720.00 purchase.
After playing gospel on a 5 string and jazz on upright since the late 70’s i’m really having a blast with this project.

The bass has some belt rash and a few knicks that I was going to repair but after settling in with it last night at rehearsal i’ve decided to just play it.

Lightweight, monster tone and really retired my Flea Jazz bass.

Great price. I have a '97 SR5 I wouldn't let go even at twice that price.

Nice - I'll bet there's a nice suntan line under that pickguard..

    I've had 1998, 2001, 2004, and now currently, a 1999 SR5 Music Man.

Those seem to be really good years...:D

Are there any bad years? My '93 fretless Ray is excellent.

    Great point!

None that I know of at all (there’s something about some finish peeling issues on the backs of a certain run of Music Man instruments in general and while I’ve seen a local case of that on a Big Al guitar, I’ve not experienced that issue first-hand).

I mostly meant, those are good years for ME!...:D

The ‘90’s seem to be really good years with EB music man. Often feature Birdseye necks.

I remember the mid-90’s being the hey-day of EB Stingrays, along with Lakland (later 90’s) and Modulus.

Every rock band or jam band seemed to have a ‘Ray (at least where I’m from)

Congrats on your purchase, Op. That price is a steal, and the bass looks great!

I associate the "good vs. bad years" thing with brands with poor QC (Fender being the most notorious), not EBMM. As much as I love my '97 birdseye SR5 I'd be in trouble trying to identify it in a blind test with its '03 rosewood SR5 brother (sound, feel, playability, everything). EBMM's quality is that consistent, even more than on pre-EB specimens. I'm a Stingray5 freak (also owned a Sterling5 HS for some time) and the only thing I can complain about is the redesigned (post '08) 3 band preamp, which sounds thinner to me than the old ones. Then again, not a quality thing @all, just a design change decision I happen not to like that much in some models. If you take any 2 of the same certain EBMM model they'll 99.9999999% duplicates. Consistency and QC. EBMM is probably the only bass brand I'd buy sight unseen.

I took off the pick guard and found coffee stains around the screw holes that cleaned off easily with Guitar polish.
