My wife surprised me a new Jazz bass as a birthday gift! I did not see this coming at all, and am most appreciative. Many thanks indeed!

I have nothing add to the internet's collective wisdom of describing a Jazz bass, but suffice it to say it's a very nice instrument. The custom shop 1960s pickups sound even better than I would have expected; even with the stock roundwound strings, I can hear that classic Joe Osborn tone coming through with the neck pickup soloed. Fit, finish, and build quality seems on par with my 1962 AVRI Precision, and the factory setup even survived shipment quite well.

It looks exactly like every other recent-model Olympic White Jazz bass you've ever seen, but here's a snapshot of this one:

So now -- what strings? :)

  2. Very nice,,enjoy it !

Congrats I got my American Standard TSB last February. Turned out to be "the one".
    Best bass I've ever had.
I strung mine with D'Addario half rounds 45~105. Didn't need to adjust neck or action and intonation was perfect.
You'll find that tone control is crazy good with those pickups. You can dial in just about anything.
In case you don't know the necks got a couple of graphite truss rods in it.

    Enjoy

Congratulations old chap! I've got DR Sunbeams on mine too. Owned it going on two years and the honeymoon is still not over. It's got the sound I've been craving for three decades. GREAT bass.

    Tapewounds are great.
I have D'Addarios on my Dean Exotica, I'm putting La Bella black tapewounds on my Precision, and I'm going to try the new La Bella Gold tapewounds on my custom Jazz bass.

I have an 08 and no matter what bass I try out nothing replaces it. I have a 2012 American P Bass but that is my backup.

Strings? It depends on what sound you're looking for. Here are some of my experiences. (Note: Personally, I prefer the slightly-slimmer .100 gauge strings, so that's what my findings are based on.)
    • Growly/Aggressive: Ernie Ball Cobalts or D'Addario FlexSteels
    • Mellow (but not muddy): D'Addario Chrome Flatwounds
    • A bit of both: Elixir NanoWeb Coated
    • Classic "Roundwound Sound", but with a little bit of the "bite" taken off the top: DR Black Beauties (for the record; they look kick-ass on a white bass with a black pickguard)

  15. I'm not married but don't you guys check your bank accounts? I'd get suspicious if I saw that kind of money "missing."

  16. I really love the CS60s pickups for the jazz bass. Amazing tone and super super growly. Enjoy!!

EDIT: I vote Rotosound Swing 66s but I believe I would be in the minority in this category.

Cool bass, congrats! Wow, the wives of TB are awesome!

I say if you already have a jazz with rounds, put some flats on this one.
