Hey all. Just picked up a 2001 fender custom shop relic. I have had many many basses over the years from sadowskys to ken smiths lakland USA, etc. this bass is one of my top 3 for sure I have ever played. It's black with a matching black headstock. I had a 2009 nos that was a dog compared to this bass in feel and tone. This one is a hair under 8.5lbs vs near 10lbs for the nos I had. Maybe that's part of it.

Are 2001 cs 1964 relics special? Is black with matching headstock rare? Never seen one before. So far its a keeper for life.

Great looking bass. I don't think you can say one year or model has a better success rate though...just some wood works better than other pieces.

Feels just like a great actual 64 jazz I got to play recently. Surprisingly similiar tone and dynamics.

I definitely think there are good and better cs basses out there. This one is a great one. I think may have something to do with the light weight and tight neck pocket? Very woody resonant tone with nice old school sweet growl. Good slap tone but great finger style tone.

Hmmm. Is it me, or does that decal look a bit odd for a CS job?

    And wouldn't a '64 have lolipop tuners?

Keep in mind I'm no Fender expert.

I hope it's real deal! Ugh. I think the lolypops came in 66 or so
