NBD - just a lowly Players series P-bass

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by geeza, Nov 29, 2018.

  1. Back in the summer of '79 I was going into my senior year of high school. I had taken my hard earned money and bought my first good bass, a '78 Precision that the local music store had leftover from their Christmas sale and still marked down to $399. I snagged it.

Mine was Oly white with a maple board. It was THE bass for a number of years, until I (stupidly) stripped the body and then eventually traded it in. I have owned many other basses over the years, but always wanted that first one back. There's just something about white with maple that flips my switch. When Fender released the Player Series P-bass in buttercream, it called my name. It looked like my old yellowed, smoke-stained P.

Thanks to the impending holidays, Sweetwater was gracious enough to have 48 month same as cash, so I ordered it on Black Friday. It arrived last night (along with a replacement black pickguard to match my old bass).

Here it is going into surgery:

    After:

The only other things to do is adding a thumbrest in the 70's location (next to the E string) and putting a Badassesque bridge on it.

The Player Series are killer basses. The one I just received (sage green P bass) is every bit as good as any of the Fender American basses I played over the past few years. Oh, and it doesn't hurt that it weighs in at 7 pounds 13 ounces!

I just remarked in another post how this bass and it’s color is the only new P that catches my eye.

Good for you! Look great, now break that thing in!

My ex had almost exactly the same 78 P-Bass as you. White with black pickguard and Badass! Hers had an EMG installed by the time she got it. Nice bass.
