Just got this lovely in a TB trade with a great TB’r. Only question is.... to Tort or not to Tort. I love it in none more black mode but think Tort would just be killer!
    Opinions?

Yeah the matching headstock almost requires the black pickguard.

You think it looks killer now... just wait until you get a nice brown tort on it.

Worst case, you’ll have different pickguards for different moods.

  5. No tort. Keep it classy :cigar:

If it had a maple fretboard I'd say no but here it could go either way.

    Congrats! Great looking bass.

On that bass, you can't go wrong. Black on black looks great. Black n tort looks great. (I prefer a bit more red tort on black though.)

Go for it man, why not. I've seen a cool looking black ray with a matching headstock and a red tort guard. Looked funky as to me!

I have 2 black Stingrays (but non-matching headstock), one with rosewood board and one with maple board. I thought of having one with a tort guard (I have a tort guard at home too), but I just prefer the look of a matte b/w/b guard on both of them, so I left them like that.

So, give it a try, you can always switch it back.

If it had a maple fretboard I'd say yes, absolutely. However, since it is a rosewood FB I don't think or feel that it is obligatory. :)
    Whatever floats your boat.
    Nice bass by the way.

    NOOOOOO!
Now a mirror pickguard could look hot.

  12. Black is the only colour id consider putting a tort guard on a Stingray - looks great already though!

No way. Looks killer just the way it is. I'd love to hear how that thing sounds.

I would tort. Definitely red. But I might go completely off the reservation with something from Deccoboom. I think a fun pickguard has good vibrations that travel through to the pickups and to a smile that makes you look like you are up something.

Tort looks like crap except on real, original vintage basses and faithful re-issues.

  20. The trouble for me is that most if not all tort looks pretty awful these days. Classic black or white (or mirrored at a push) for me.
