Picked up a Chinese Squier P-bass locally for $50. Someone had apparently stepped on the plugged in cable when it was in a stand and snapped the jack and tip of the pickguard clean off. No biggie, as it was going to get a white pearloid pickguard and I have plenty of parts to get it working.

Of course, the quality control in the China factories being what it is, the bridge wasn't in the right place. Easy fix. Neck and frets were nasty. Nothing that a little steel wool and Simple Green couldn't fix.

Wiring's done, just waiting on the pickguard (should arrive a week from Tuesday). Getting chrome knobs with white pearloid tops. Will post pics when it's done. IMG_20190531_191714.jpg IMG_20190602_104937.jpg

I wanted a project bass to practice repair work on. I like bringing the dead back to life. And this one had three strings in the grave. The poorly installed bridge was the only real glitch on it. You can see the punch holes where it's supposed to be, and the filled holes in that pic above.

I'm hesitant to buy any instrument, new or used without having the chance to hold it and check it out first hand. It's like buying shoes. Gee, those LOOK nice....

Yeah, Chinese Affinity. This one had a straight neck, truss rod works, fret ends are real nice. After the new p/g and knobs, I'll be less than $70 into it.

I have one of those, the pickups are hot and it plays great. Not sure what more you could want for the price. It'll be perfect for the lake house!

I've got the perfect bass, just need a lakehouse. :)

(Edit: of course. I probably could've had that lakehouse if I didn't buy so many danged basses.) :woot:

LOL, I was just being a bit sarcastic (is there an emoji for that?). I used to like to fish but haven't in about 20 years. I just like lakes...and oceans. For the last 37 years I've been a bit less than 5 minutes away from the ocean if I get green lights but that's where I did a lot of work so I'll just have to settle for that.

Bought 30 acres of waterfront 2 hours away in '95 and completed the house in '05. The longer I've had it, the less I fish and more time goes into maintaining it. COPD ain't helping either.

    congrats on your new project!

just curious.. is it a misaligned bridge? or is it the neck pocket?

Not so much a lake house for me. I’m not much on being a flat water sailor. But with me, a cottage up on a cliffside with the Atlantic slamming below it can induce low grade rapture just thinking about it.

Sorry. It’s the New Englander in me rearing it’s pointed little head.

A couple of years ago I bought a red Squier P from the local craigs, also for $50 bucks. Some idiot scratched the word cannibal into the finish near the forearm area, so I simply sanded the finish off on the forearm.
I got one of those $10 tort pickguards from the stratosphere on ebay.
