just received my JMJ Mustang bass today and i'm diggin'it. i got my first mustang bass back in 1972 (it was a 1969 sunburst one). i wish i never sold it, so i bought another sunburst one (a 1971) in 2004. i regretfully sold that one too a few years later since i was so used to playing long scale basses. both of them had the arm relief and tummy cut and MOP (mother of pearloid) pickguards.

I've been playing a lot of my current short scale basses lately (2 Gibsons, 4 Hofners and a Hagstrom) so i really wanted to get another Mustang, but after seeing how high their prices are these days, i just ordered a JMJ one from Sweetwater on wednesday via 2-day shipping and it actually only took 1 day to get it!

i still do prefer the ones with a tummy cut and arm relief (for comfort), but i gotta say, the JMJ is a really nice bass. mine weighs in at 7lbs 13.2oz and they come with Fender 9050L flatwounds on them, which are my string of choice on Fenders. I found the fret edges to be a little sharp so after addressing that, adjusting the neck, action, pickups and strobing it, it plays great and is ready for my gig this saturday night.

here's a couple of pics of it:

I love the JMJ Mustang. If I had a bigger budget, I would get one just for fun.

Congrats on your new bass! That is on my short list of basses I'd like to try and agree with everything you said about the contour and belly cut being great features. Let us know how it plays without those after you get a chance to gig it this weekend. Enjoy!

  11. Power to you playing the short stuff. I try and try but short scale basses just don't 'feel' right to me any more. I can barely force myself to play guitars anymore, my hands just feel good on a long scale bass. Plus they just look so tiny on me.

What the hell is JMJ for those of us that do not speak Fendernese?

I wonder why Leo Fender was giving that sweetheart a more opulent bridge for being known as a penny pincher ...

    Congrats! That’s a great bass.
  16. That's a beautiful axe! Congrats!
  17. Very cool, nice colour!
I tried a 78 Mustang a few months back. Sounded massive but felt tiny!!
I’d love a Starfire or a Hagstrom Viking, though!

    Hi John,

It’s great to see someone who’s provide so many new bass days (NBD) to so many Talkbass users and who has restored so many vintage basses for us to get a great bass for himself.

Probably for balance because of the smaller body ‍♂️
