Well curiosity got the best of me. I saw a thread about these $56 Precision style bass guitars and I figured, what the heck! My intention was to attempt a Larry Hartke Torched Finish on it. Like this, only in white. As is, the bass plays & sounds pretty good. Especially for $56. No fret sprout, chunky P neck. Lots of neck dive because the bass only weighs 6.7 pounds. So, has anyone out there attempted a torch finish? I figured after, I may put some ultralight tuners to help with the neck dive. Definitely going to paint the headstock white. Thoughts?
ToS, looks good to me! Love the white finish, but you do what you want with it, of course... ... the bottom split... are the pole pieces shy?
The bottom split pickup fell inside the bass during shipping. There was no foam under the pickups. Pickup is glued to the cover. The glue let go. So I just put foam under it and screwed it back in. Now it's fine.
That's what I was wondering. Larry Hartke doesn't look like he clear-coats over the burning. I was thinking of doing that.
Before left, after right. Haven't torched anything yet. Painted the headstock to match along with my last name on the headstock. Took out the crappy pickups and put in a set of classic vibe Squire pickups I had laying around. Much better than the stocks. Threw a set of EB Super Slinkys on too. Very playable bass right now. Action is a touch high, but I'll work on that another day.
I gotta say, it's imminently gigable. I'm done bringing expensive bass guitars out to bars. In between sets last week some drunk was dancing around on stage with my microphone when I came back from the bathroom. They almost fell onto my bass on the stand next to my amp. If that happens again, I will gladly smash this bass over their head.
You gotta be careful with these cheapo basses. They may sound good at home at low volume, but there's no way to really tell how it sounds out front unless you get an honest opinion from the sound guy or someone who knows about this stuff. I've seen a few guys locally playing with entry-level instruments and to me they definitely lack the warmth of the nicer ones. Proceed with caution.
