NBD! Pretty happy after a bunch of elbow grease...

Ordered this last weekend and it got delivered Thursday. I had time to really go over it this morning.

It looked great in the listing, but when it showed up it needed EVERYTHING. The strings were dead and discolored. The fingerboard and frets were covered in gunk. The back of the neck was coated in gunk (pretty sure it never got cleaned, or the previous owner always ate chicken wings before playing... :D). The neck had a ton of relief and the saddles were bottomed out. The body had a light film of yuck on it. It needed help.

    So...

...after a small neck shim (there was no shim in there when I got it), a LARGE amount of cleaning, new set of stainless strings, truss rod adjustment, intonation adjustment, and action adjustment...

    ...It's all good

I don't think this bass ever got setup or attended to. Thankfully everything works so it took a setup really well. The electronics were all 100% functional from the start.

Here it is on my bench after all that attention:

It's a Ray35 with koa top. I really like the finish and matching headstock. The body is mahogany and it's not too heavy at 9.5 lbs.

Early impressions are really good. It sounds good though my practice rig (old GK 700RB head through what used to be a Crate 1×15 combo but was gutted and gets used as a cab :smug:). It's pretty warm and full, so the stainless strings are a good fit (I was worried they'd be too clanky).

I did find a high fret, but I setup around it and the action is still pretty low. I bought this as a backup and a bass for outdoor and questionable situations where I don't want to bring the nicer basses. I have to get it out to some gigs and see how it sounds outta my Markbass combo and in the mix. If that checks out I'll address the fret level and probably swap out the tuning machines (which work but are kinda meh), maybe a new pickguard too.

Best grease for a bass? Elbow grease - no contest.

Finally got to play this one with a band and it sounds great in the mix! It cut through really nice but still has good low end response (OK, I'm sure any SR owner reading this just said "well duh" :smug:). It's definitely a keeper

I didn't take pics when I unboxed it. Everything was functional and I couldn't return it if I wanted to, so I just got to cleaning. It definitely seemed dirtier than in the listing pictures:

I think it was sold by a small music shop so maybe it was displayed and people played it. Don't matter now, it's MUCH better :D

Not really on the cheap, I paid $600 for it which I think is fair
