NBD: Questions about 1980s MIJ Fender P Bass

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by rodgersk24, Nov 2, 2010.

  1. I found a deal on a MIJ E series P Bass that I couldn't pass up. I absolutely love it! I do have a couple questions, however.

I did some research and I believe it is a 57 Reissue. The neck stamped PB-557, and the neck pocket on the body is PB-562 (I believe, it's been a few days since I had the neck off). Is this correct, or am I way off?

Next, I know it is an E Series, which would date it between 1984-1987. Is there any way to narrow that down to a specific year?

Finally, does anyone know the colors of those instruments for those years (1984-1987)? I admit I am very ignorant with vintage instruments and their reissues, so I do not know if this is the original color or a refinished color. If it is not correct, I may be interested in pursuing a refinish to a period-correct color.

I did do quite a bit of searching for these questions, both on the Internet in general on TalkBass.com, however I couldn't find anything. Apologies if I missed something in my searching.

    Thanks for your help!

  2. no it looks a standard mij p bass, the headstock on it isnt like the 57,it just has Feder Precision Bass, not anything else. And thats not a reissue color either, either way it s a great bass, i miss my 84 precision
  3. It's not unusual to find a 57 body matched with a 62 neck..I have several.
And this is not a stock color..;)
  4. Ah, mine is vice versa, 57 is on the neck and 62 is on the body. So this is a "regular" model? By which I mean, not some reissue model?

Pardon my ignorance, but it has a vintage-style truss rod adjustment at the heel with the Phillips head; when did Fender switch to the modern-style truss rod adjustment?

Thank you both for your help!

Nice-looking bass, RodgersK. Not sure what all colors they were offered in, but I've seen others the same color as yours, so that must have been one of them. I have a Vintage White E-Series that has the same markings as yours. It's not a reissue series. Just a regular old P-Bass from the mid-'80s. Excellent basses though.

I wasn't wild about the original pickup in mine, so I put a set of SPB-1s in it. It's one of my absolute favorite basses now.
