That's the one, I resisted for a bit as sunburst isn't my thing but I've had a yen for one for a while and they are rare things...

It was a hard decision but traded my Maruszczyk fretless as part of the deal and my Fender PBAC fretless is for sale at Soundpad. Two other basses = one Rick.

So if I decide to sell it quickly is that Rick-rolling?

Yes I'm guessing the lack of frets is going to impede my search for the Chris Squire tone :)

Luckily I was able to see a shot from this perspective before buying:

I’ve owned 2 Rics over the last 40 years and didn’t like them, but ever time I see a picture of one, I want one again. A relatively rare fretless one intensifies the desire. Here’s hoping you get along with it. Or hate it and sell it to me .

chunky neck or skinny neck? Heavy or light?

I've got 4 Rics now and love them all (a natural and a midnight blue 4003, a 4003s fretless, and the 4003s-8). I do "get" that they're a love/hate thing, though, I can see how the ergonomics could really irk some folks, and even the sound isn't perfect for everyone's tastes.

Congrats! Chris Brubeck (Dave's son) uses one exclusively. I saw him at The Newport Jazz Festival a while back. Killer tone!

Half the time Chris's videos inspire me, half the time his videos depress me....

I would love to see him live.

Seems like you missed a great opportunity to post a group photo. ;)
Also, speaking of rare boids, a fretless S model?

Wow - you might not guess that a Rickenbacker fretless would be the way to get a tone and feel that fits in with a jazz quartet so beautifully. Of course, it's Chris Brubeck the player doing it....

I used to do something like that with mine too, forgot exactly but wish I had just had a luthier put normal side dots on it, I was too much of a purist back then. I had a couple of nice old FL's that I stupidly sold too, a '72 and about an early 80's 4001FL, I didn't know how to date them back then.

Be careful trying to put round wounds on those, the neck finish is kind of soft. I superglued mine which was a real pain, it came out nice though but was a lot of work. I wish I had left it alone actually and tried Nickel DR hi beams as they seem to be real easy on fretless basses.
