Hi folks, Yesterday, my black Squier VM Jaguar Special arrived from Musician's Friend. After a few years of casually playing guitar, I decided to try out bass and landed on the Jag based on price, body style, reputation, and the flexibility of the PJ configuration. I spent about three hours goofing around with it last night, and am a little concerned about the pickups. They're both slightly misaligned (the precision moreso than the jazz) and the precision pickup leans forward. Since I don't really know what I'm looking for in the sound (also, I don't have a bass amp yet, and have only been playing through Band Fuse and Rocksmith's free play options until I can scratch together the money to buy a semi-decent amp), I'm hoping you all can tell me if this is something worth contacting Musician's Friend about. Based on similar forum posts, most people seem to think there shouldn't be an appreciable difference in the sound, but still. I attached a few pics.
I had a VM Jaguar - Long scale/passive version - It was the exact same way. It didn't seem to effect the playability, but it was one of the things that annoyed me about that bass, which I traded with cash for an AmStd Jazz bass which I am completely happy with. Actually, I thought the offset strings to pups was a flaw in just my bass until your post. I even upgraded my VMJag with original Fender pups and it was still offset.
Probably the foam underneath the P-pup that got askance during shipping -- it happens. Pop off the pickguard, check it out. Pull the pup out. Either re-align the foam or put in new stuff and lower it a bit if it bothers your any.
It'll probably play ok, but the OCD in me would cause me to return for replacement or refund. The jazz PU is about on par with the norm but that precision pickup would drive me nuts just looking at it. The pic is at a bit of an angle but you can still clearly see the poles and strings line up relatively well on my Squier Jag SS.
