NBD: Stand by for action - Stingray!

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Paul Corrosion, Feb 11, 2019.

  1. The Christmas overtime money was burning a hole in my pocket again, so it was time to indulge my yearly GAS attack. The money was really good this time round, so I was prepared to push the boat out a bit and realise one of my dream basses - an EBMM Stingray.
Every time I visited my local shop, I always passed them by as they were out of my price range but a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't get over myself and asked to try one out. Naturally, it was immediate lust. The feel, the look and the tones, oh yes. It was a 2EQ special edition with a butterscotch finish. Trouble was, at £2099, it was still way out of my price range.
Following discussions online with friends, I started looking at used ones and found this beauty. A hardly used 3EQ in my favourite colour, black, complete with hard case and really nice leather Lewes strap for £950. It's in tip top condition and the lovely chap I bought it from chucked in a couple of sets of strings. All-in-all, well worth the 180 mile, 5 hour round trip to pick her up. Now I'm going to play the heck out of her while you guys look at the pictures. :)

Nice! I have a black/ black 1986 with rosewood fretboard that I have had since the 90s. I'll never part with it. Congrats!

Nice. The objectively superior combo of black and maple. Win.

For those of you who aren't old enough/British enough to get the subtle gag in the title...

Hard to agree, I lean toward Natural and Maple.

But I’ll go along with the sentiment. It’s definitely a win....:D

  10. I'm glad someone got it. I would have expected nothing less from an Eric & Ernie fan (your signature quote). :)

  11. Well, funnily enough, even though black is my favourite, I have to say that the butterscotch finish on the one I tried in the shop really did grow on me as I kept looking back at the picture the missus took. For a couple of days, I had to rein in the impulse to go back and buy it on finance. :)

  12. It wasn't the best of the the Gerry Anderson theme tunes, for sure. That accolade goes to "Thunderbirds", which IMO is a contender for best TV theme tune anywhere ever. ;-)
And cheers, I'm loving it already. I have the day off work today. I won't be going anyplace. :-D

  13. Especially in Captain Scarlet, where the puppets were cleared based on Roger Moore and Steve McQueen.

  14. Thanks! I don't think this one will be going anywhere ever again (you know, apart from to gigs). :)

OK, time out: What is this??? I kinda love it but can’t figure out if this was an actual show? Whaaat???

Back on topic: Great Stingray! I also like the look of the one you left behind. Maybe you need two.

  17. Back in the sixties, the British TV producers Gerry & Sylvia Anderson brought out a series of science fiction shows with puppets as the characters. These days, they're considered classic TV. The shows were actually very well plotted and written - although the acting was a bit wooden (boom boom).

And cheers, but don't tempt me, man - you know I'll do it. ;-)

How I love the Brits. Those look amazing. I sense a rabbit hole in my future.

How much tempting would it take? Heck, the missus snapped a shot- it’s in the bag already

  19. Not much tempting at all. Unfortunately, she's looking over my shoulder right now and can already see the daggers. :-D

I'm a P Bass guy, but the Stingray IMO is the most beautiful bass ever made.
