(Replacing my (stolen) Yamaha BB1024x, I wasn't able to find a straight replacement in Aus so I got to thinking, what I really liked about the yammy was the legit p-bass tone. I like the versatility of a PJ but i have another PJ and use the p pickup 90% of the time anyway. So I decided to aim for the p-sound that I love and get something that would feel and play really nice, pref with a maple board.) Decision: American Standard Precision. Okay it's sort of a boring choice with all the stuff that's available these days. But damn. I love this bass. The build quality looks perfect. Compared to the mid-range Yamaha, everything is just tighter and more exact. And the P is lighter. The bridge is nice and through-body, I like. The neck's 'rolled' edge with smoothed-off fret ends feels great in your hand and makes it feel a bit like a vintage instrument. At first i thought the neck finish was a bit too glossy and sticky, and considered giving it a light sanding, but tried it out first: After a 4-hour jam in a smoking-hot room i'm sure i dont need to touch it. Out of the box the action is perfect. The Fender custom shop pickup sounds exactly like it should: big thump, smooth growl. (I don't know how "custom shop" can describe parts for a mass-produced bass, but anyway it's good.) In a loud jam with 3 guitars it was easy to cut through and it sounded fantastic. To top it off, the hard case is really nice and it came with a cable. Immediately added an allparts tort guard and a decent DSL leather strap. Pbass glamour shots below.
Congrats and enjoy, that's a beautiful bass and I bet it sounds amazing. My American Standard Precision is my favourite instrument, they are fantastic in my opinion.
Love the DSL strap too... gotta love good Aussie cowhide! I have 3 of them and there's a 4th on the way. If they're good enough for Lemmy Kilmister, they're good enough for me!
I couldn't agree with you more. I've got a Yamaha BB2024X and a Fender American P-bass. While the Yamaha has a great tone, the Fender also has a great tone (just different than the Yamaha) and it's a lot lighter than the Yamaha so it gets gigged quite a bit. Congrats on snagging a great instrument.
I would keep black pickguard or even white, tort looks much better on any colour but the black IMO. But yes, that is nice bass...ofcourse
