Hi TBers, just wanted to share my NBD joy with y’all, and thank everyone who has been answering my questions and helping me narrow it down to a decision. I had been obsessing over getting a P for some time. In 30+ years of playing, I have never owned one. Because of the sheer amount of potential directions one can go in when selecting a P, I was overwhelmed. Squier, MIM, CIJ, MIA? Which MIA? PJ or straight-up P? Some other brand? Is the $400 one really as good as the $2,000 one? Color? Neck profile? Vintage style? Gah… I was losing my mind looking at P basses. Must have looked at 100 of them online, over the course the holiday weekend, and was completely baffled by the end. Since I hadn’t tried most of these in person, I figured that was the next step. So I went to the dreaded Guitar Center in Danvers, MA (actually not a bad one as GC’s go), and tried out 5 basses • A 90’s MIM with EMGs played great, incredible price, but had dented frets and I didn’t want the EMGs • A 2020 Special Edition PJ Deluxe - the green one that was on sale over the 4th Just a really nice looking, very well put together bass. This one was heave AF though, and I wasn’t sold on the green, or the PJ config, since I was really looking for a P • A used Fender Aerodyne Shweeet bass! Man did this thing play and tone for days. But for me it had a tragic flaw; the binding dug into my forearm :/ • A 2020 American Performer in some sort of sparkly blue played amazing. incredible tone. Fell in love. Hated color. But set it aside, ready to buy, until… • A 2020 Player Series (MIM) in traditional sunburst I was pretty much set on the MIA, until I tried this. First thing, it was so light, I almost threw it over my shoulder when I picked it up. Loved the finish, and then when I started playing it, I got “lost” In it, and realized it was the one. Also it was $500 less than the MIA s Funny thing is, when I went to buy it, I said “I assume there is a case or gig bag with this”, and the employee looks at me like I’m a noob and say “no, pretty much nothing under $1,000 has a case or gig bag anymore”. Oh, GC. I’m sure that’s not true. Or maybe it is. But no worries, I don’t want another case. Just thought it was kind of interesting. So I drove home with it seatbelted into the front seat Anyway, NBD! Woohoo! My first P bass. Now I must begin the journey Thanks for all who advised!
