If you guys saw my other post I'm sure you know where this is going. I saw an ad on CL and a guy was selling his Ray 35 for $475. I sent him a couple emails and after talking for a bit we found out that I bought a bass from him almost a year ago, a Rockbass Corvette $$. He said he would take the Rockbass and 50 bucks and the bass would be mine. I thought about it for a couple days and decided to do the trade. I wasn't using it and he really wanted it back, he had to sell it for child support. This is two bass firsts for me. It's my first 5 string and my first Stingray like bass. I jumped straight from 4 to 6 string and never had a 5. Overall I am very impressed. Rays have never really jumped out at me but after looking up a lot of videos and playing this thing I'm really liking the tones , it doesn't sound like anything I have. Well enough talking here is the bass porn 20160804_185808. 20160804_185817. 20160804_185827. I haven't cleaned it yet and it needs new strings but it's pretty clean and sounds killer, that low B is to die for. It also matches my fretless jazz quite nicely 20160804_185906. So far I'm really liking this bass, I can't compare it to a US stingray because I've never played one but from all I read these sound really close.

I remember your post as that's where we couldn't tell if the B string was too close to the edge.
Looks like an awesome bass - Congrats! Glad the trade works for you. I agree, the MM sound can't be duplicated so the only solution in getting that tone is well, to get one.
As an aside, not long after your thread - in fact, I think the next day, a US Musicman Sub Ray showed up on my local CL. Hadn't planned on getting a bass this year, but now I have one. So thanks for putting that thought in my head. lol!

I thought he wanted your Rockbass back for sentimental reasons, he wanted your bass back so he could sell it???

The low B does look a little close but I think that's just how it is, I double checked everything before the trade and it played fine. And you are so welcome ;)

I think I worded that weird. He sold the Rockbass to Mr first for child support, then got excited when I offered it back to him for a trade. Seems like we are both happy with the trade

Great! As someone new to the MM basses, have you figured out what those two knobs on either side of the bridge are for? :)

I have no idea. Are they just posts that go into the body? I was thinking about taking it off to look but I'll save that for another day

that B is way off where it should be(edge), however, the G is in a better spot then the USA SR5's-usually its the G that is really close to the end of the FB.

I have heard about the g string slipping off. Honestly I'm not worried about it, I have no problems playing it. Maybe one of these days I'll take off the neck and try to straighten it a bit more, or try to tap the nut a little it to even it out. Little minor flaw, I don't think the bridge is off because they line up perfect over the poles

Has anyone cut the PG down on one of these? I guess I'm having mixed feelings about it. I think it would be fine on a solid color but the natural ash is too pretty to cover up

oooph..those who love the Stingray 5 would wince..that is a pretty iconic PG...

That B does look a little off - could the neck just need re-setting? Like pop it off, put it back in square, re-attach and re-string? The angle from the nut slot seems to suggest this might work?

I didn't mean to offend, just curious ;) I like the look of it but look at the grain received_1147618005308680.

I'll mess with the neck when I actually restring and set this up, like I said before it doesn't bother me one bit. This bass is really growing on me :)

That's a really nice looking ash body for a bass in that range... I've seen way more expensive basses that didn't have such a nice grain...

Thank you, it really does look good. I have seen pictures of these basses that looked like they had 3 piece bodies and wewere not matched at all but they did a great job on this one

Such a shame to hide that wonderful wood. :)
If the 5 stringers used the same oval pickguard of the 4 string Rays, answer would easily be to get a clear pickguard. That's nice.

  16. I had one of those and sold it a couple years ago when cash flow wasn't too great... really do miss it. Fantastic instrument and truly great value for the money! One of the most well-intonated necks of any bass I've owned, and very easy to set up for any degree of action that you like.

Maybe I'll just buy another PG and chop that one up, just to be able to switch it around a little

I don't usually comment on NBD posts, but that's a pretty bass.

My SBMM Ray 35, which I had for a year or so, sounded like magic, played wonderfully, and looked great (transparent white), but it weighed 11 damn pounds.
