So yesterday I was browsing offerup and came across a Fender MIM P-Bass project for $100. The ad stated that the neck was bad and that it needed to be replaced. It also, on the side near the output jack, had a chunk of paint fall off being that it was dropped. This lead me to two thoughts: 1. The neck is really bad and I can throw on a cheap chinese fretless neck and rock that. 2. The bass just needs a serious neck adjustment. So I respond to the ad right away. I get a message back that it was mine and the whole when/where to meet. We set up the deal and I try and make it through the rest of my day until I can get off work. The suspense is killing me. I even had to borrow a few bucks from a friend/coworker because I had some major expenses happen to me. But this seemed totally worth it. 5 rolls around and I am outta there like Fred Flinstone. I stop and get a 3/16" long handle allen key and proceed to the spot. The lovely young couple pulls up and we introduce each other. He pulls out the bass and I take my first look at it. Yeap, just as I was hoping the heel of the neck is buried in the body. Next I look down the neck, it's not twisted. This is just getting better and better. Next I ask them if I can check the truss rod to see if it works. They agreed and I pulled out the allen key I just bought. I turn it back and forth and the neck responds. Actually it wasn't engaged at all. So with this, and trying to keep my best poker face, I calmly put the bass back in the case and give them the money. I peel outta there as quick as I could. So now I am home and this is where I see if there was any hidden problems with the bass. I pop the neck off, because I know it needs a shim and a good cleaning, and straighten the neck out. Put the shim in and reattached the neck. The only other problem that I had was I had to replace one of the saddles. I guess someone had lost the little allen screws that adjust the string height on the e string and just screwed in two small wood screws into it. The screw heads were against the base plate giving the height the saddle had. Did I mention that it has EMG's in it? Didn't really notice them because the ad pictures were not close up. So, needless to say, after the setup I have a really nice MIM P-Bass. Oh yeah, question for you flatwound guys. The bass came with flatwounds and I tried searching but could not come up with a conclusive answer. What flats has mid-blue silk on both ends and different color ball ends? E is brass, A is red, D is black and G is green.
I'm not 100% sure on the flats, but it sounds like Chromes to me. Great find! You should still turn it into a fretless though
Nice find! I've recently been checking the app "letgo" that my girlfriend has been using to sell off unwanted furniture she inherited from her mom's house. I've found a couple Squiers for dirt cheap but no Fenders yet. Congrats.
Great Score! My first bass (still got it though only the wood is original) was a '95 MIM P. Yours looks like a 2002 model, so the specs might be a bit different, but if it's like mine, it has a nice shallow (front to back) neck and a lightweight Agathis body. Very comfortable on long sets.
Very good Eilif on the year. You would be correct. I don't think that fretted necks should be turned into fretlesses. If you want a fretless, buy a fretless neck.
I agree actually. I was mostly joking, but I was referring to the fretless neck you were going to put on it if the neck was toast.
I love it when you get your mind all set for a sweet deal, and it comes true. I recently bought an Alembic, and all the way to pick it up I was thinking- What's wrong with it?...are the pictures from years ago?...The price made me expect the worst. I got there, and he pulled out a closet queen in original case. Rock that thang, even if you have one, for $100 everybody needs another bass.
Sorry I misread you. It's still a thought though but I have a fretless that needs a new neck anyways. It was converted to be a fretless by grinding the frets flat with the board so that only the tangs are still in the fret slots. It has a weird bwah to it. This is why I hate people that do this conversion. Maybe I will make this into a backup or main fretless. A new song that one of my bands wrote would really benefit to have a fretless on it.
Billy Gibbons said he would drop $100 on any ax with a humbucker. I think most bass players would drop $100 on any playable p-bass....
