It started here. I want a fun bass that screams 1980s, BUT.... That brought about the search. Then came the purchases..... And here we go. First up, the bone stock Ibanez. This bass really "needs" nothing. It sounds great. And the neck is ridiculously fast. My phone is unable to capture the proper color. It (and the roses in the background) are somewhere between magenta and hot pink....but closer to magenta. It is NOT the red it looks in these pics. It's in great shape. It's likely early 90s, but it looks 80s enough. Now comes the oddball. The neck is from an Ibanez destroyer. I have no idea about the body or bridge. The electronics are EMG. This bass needs a nip here and a tuck there. The upper horn strap button is loose. The neck adjusts at the base and there's (obviously) no hole for that in the body. So I'll have one routed. There's a faded shape of a sideways heart (maybe where a sticker was?) near the upper horn. It has tons of potential. And it sounds..... freaking amazing. If I can't make it play like the other one, I'll swap the electronics from this one to that one. If anyone has a clue as to the origin of the body, I would love to know. The bridge is a little rough so I'll likely post a pic of the screw pattern to make sure I get one that matches. If I can get this one dialed in and modded up to come together, it'll be my favorite.... quirks and all. The black and pink looks really sharp. I like them both. They're a lot of fun.
I once owned an Aria Pro II - can't recall the series - with the body that looked exactly like your FrankenBass' in the second set of pictures. The same finish as well, from what I can tell.
Here we go!!!! Jailbird! (in her late 30s ) Doesn' t look like an Ibby body to me. (but I am not an Ibby guru) I love the idea to mod! The 80s were about modding! (don' t get cream pup covers though ) greetings Wise
Nice basses. Brought back memories of my first 5er. It was a passive Ibanez TR series with jazz pickups that had that style headstock but with a 4+1 tuner layout for the extra string.
Awesome.......As a guy that occasionally gigs with Explorer shapes, big thumbsup ........now, see if you can find a mullet on eBay
I loved the 1980's & I think as bass players it was a golden time for us. So many brands, colours & styles I doubt we will ever have it that good again.
The music...in every genre from hairband rock to pop to euro to funk, was chock full of great basslines...The biggest thing about the 80s: It was a creative push-the-envelope era, where players of any instrument really started pushing the boundaries, limitations, and breaking rules. No biggie nowadays, but back then, it was all new territory..it was also the main decade where many pop music hits featured fretless bass dominately as par for course <---nostalgic thinking, thats all
I think I remember the start of the search; glad you found her! Play her in great health man, awesome bass!
Nah. We do some 80s songs. And most of them happen to be tuned down a half step. So I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and whip one of these out as my 80s bass when the time comes.
Thanks! We just came out of a mini drought. We had zero rain and well over 90 degrees for three weeks. Then the bottom fell out and the grass woke up.
