a lot of running backs are bolting for the nfl. i guess that this is, in part, because of a perceived weak field (so less than stellar backs compete against each other and not the next ladanian thomlinson, etc.) glen coffee is going to declare; pair this with andre smith leaving, and i don't know what to make of alabama's running game next season. (let alone the graduation of JPW--in a perfect world, it would be hard not to improve, but we'll see.)
iowa will definitely be hurting without shonn green, as will uconn without their beast of burden derron brown.
south carolina is going to have a bad year. smelley is transferring to play baseball, so the only qb with experience will be garcia. ouch.
i'll bet that we'll see some gators declaring in a few weeks. the surest bet is brandon spikes. i hope that harvin returns, but i doubt it. some of the eligible defensive backs might file paperwork, too. i do expect tebow to return, but without harvin, it just won't be the same. i think we'll go ahead and win the sec-east again but really only because the other teams are in shambles.
i don't know too much about who is leaving and staying on usc, except for probably malualuga and taylor mays, but i think that--especially with the bcs deal with espn--their spot in the championship game is for them to lose. with their bowl performances these last three seasons, i think that they'll be forgiven for a single loss to oregon state or stanford or ucla or (hopefully) cal.
speaking of cal, i fully predict that i'll be sick of hearing about jahvid best's heisman campaign by early september. i think that the push for representation in that inexplicably venerated popularity contest honoring individual achievement in a team sport known as the heisman will be the defining characteristic of the 09 season for the golden bears. (that and another thrashing of stanford. ...and probably a significant quarterback controversy through most of the season. )
i don't know much about the recruiting stuff yet, so visirale will have to fill in those blanks!
i predict a bcs championship game of usc vs. winner of sec. voters will reward the pac-10's bowl season by pegging it as a "tough" conference, like they have with the sec after the years following auburn's snub. (thanks, auburn!) ...come to think of it, it definitely seems like the pac-10 was being punished after usc's loss to texas (and the big 10 is definitely being punished currently and will continue to be for a few more seasons until they right that ship), but now has redeemed itself through a few years of solid bowl play.
anyway, SEC vs. Pac 10 for the 09 title. (with maybe an argument from texas thrown in--there has to be controversy somewhere! it's the bcs, after all.)
