NCAA Football Off-Season

a lot of running backs are bolting for the nfl. i guess that this is, in part, because of a perceived weak field (so less than stellar backs compete against each other and not the next ladanian thomlinson, etc.) glen coffee is going to declare; pair this with andre smith leaving, and i don't know what to make of alabama's running game next season. (let alone the graduation of JPW--in a perfect world, it would be hard not to improve, but we'll see.)

iowa will definitely be hurting without shonn green, as will uconn without their beast of burden derron brown.

south carolina is going to have a bad year. smelley is transferring to play baseball, so the only qb with experience will be garcia. ouch.

i'll bet that we'll see some gators declaring in a few weeks. the surest bet is brandon spikes. i hope that harvin returns, but i doubt it. some of the eligible defensive backs might file paperwork, too. i do expect tebow to return, but without harvin, it just won't be the same. i think we'll go ahead and win the sec-east again but really only because the other teams are in shambles.

i don't know too much about who is leaving and staying on usc, except for probably malualuga and taylor mays, but i think that--especially with the bcs deal with espn--their spot in the championship game is for them to lose. with their bowl performances these last three seasons, i think that they'll be forgiven for a single loss to oregon state or stanford or ucla or (hopefully) cal.

speaking of cal, i fully predict that i'll be sick of hearing about jahvid best's heisman campaign by early september. :rollno: i think that the push for representation in that inexplicably venerated popularity contest honoring individual achievement in a team sport known as the heisman will be the defining characteristic of the 09 season for the golden bears. (that and another thrashing of stanford. ...and probably a significant quarterback controversy through most of the season. :rollno:)

i don't know much about the recruiting stuff yet, so visirale will have to fill in those blanks! :D

i predict a bcs championship game of usc vs. winner of sec. voters will reward the pac-10's bowl season by pegging it as a "tough" conference, like they have with the sec after the years following auburn's snub. (thanks, auburn!) ...come to think of it, it definitely seems like the pac-10 was being punished after usc's loss to texas (and the big 10 is definitely being punished currently and will continue to be for a few more seasons until they right that ship), but now has redeemed itself through a few years of solid bowl play.

anyway, SEC vs. Pac 10 for the 09 title. (with maybe an argument from texas thrown in--there has to be controversy somewhere! it's the bcs, after all.)

glen coffee already declared.

Mark Ingram will be the primary running back, and he's a straight badass. Roy Upchurch and Terry Grant will be backups, along with some others. RB will not be the problem with Bama, the big question will be the O-line. Caldwell and Smith will be the big one's to replace.
I don't think QB will be a problem either. We saw Greg McElroy in a few games this year and he looked really impressive -

If Tebow comes back, I predict UF to go wire to wire #1 and repeat the championship.

If not, probably still a top 10 team, but championshp might be stretching it. Our defense will be unreal next year, with most likely only Spikes leaving.

There is a lot of freshman talent on the Gators this year. Can't wait to see how they progress. I can't imagine how good Demps/Rainey will be by their junior and senior years.

My prediction on who stays and goes: Harvin and Spikes are gone, Tebow comes back.

Auburn is getting a complete overhaul. There will be new faces appearing on boths sides of the ball (on the field and on the sidelines). A lot of people give Auburn hell because they hired Gene Chizik. Sure, he went 5-19 at Iowa State. Let's think about this though, who did he have to work with there? Exactly. Chizik knows defense (if you think i'm lying, ask Auburn's undefeated 2004 season or Texas 2005 BCS Championship season). Chizik has gotten Ted Roof as DC and Guz Malzahn as OC(I must say though, this is the most obscure named coaching staff i've ever seen at AU.). I believe that the traditional Auburn football will be coming back this season. I'm not going to lay any claims that we'll be fighting for a NC but don't be surprised if we have just as much a shot at the SEC title as any other team. Chizik will do fine recruiting (even against Nick Moneybags Saban) in Alabama and it's definitely going to be interesting to see what happens, especially in the SEC west with Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Ole Miss.

WAR EAGLE! :)

I don't think USC and the Pac-10 were punished for the Rose Bowl vs. Texas - a fantastic game that went down to the wire. I believe it's more a symptom of a lazy media, as described in the article that Atoz posted concerning Utah and lack of knowledge, or more importantly, lack of concern about football west of the CST time zone.

As much as I would have loved to have USC in the title game this year, Florida and Oklahoma were both legit choices. And as much as I'd like to believe that USC will be a shoo-in for the 2010 BCS title game, they lose ten defensive starters, which I'm sure will be written about extensively. I just hope Taylor Mays stays for his senior year.

If there's a conference that deserves to be "punished," , although I don't think there is, I'd nominate the Big 12. Texas seems to be the only team that can consistently win a bowl game.

What I'd like to see is preseason rankings spread around throughout the different conferences a bit more. In September, the SEC had five teams in the Top 10, and I think the Big 12 had at least four in the same month. It makes it harder for a team like USC or Utah to crack the Top 5 when their competition is so lightly regarded, and being able to say "I told you so" after the bowl season is little consolation for programs that deserve a title shot.

usc's defense might have a bit of a drop-off from this season to the next, but that program more than any other simply "reloads" with talent.

here's food-for-thought for the gators fans: the clock is ticking with urban meyer. once his youngest (now 10 years old) is in college, he'll be at notre dame! :bawl::bawl::bawl:

so we have, what, another eight-ish years of the meyer-era. i just don't see him sticking around once he's able to land his dream job, and i'm sure the AD at notre dame would gladly oust whoever his middling coach is by then (certainly not weis! :p) for meyer.

we need to stock up on football championships while we still can!!! :D

3.75 actually
and so what? it's not like he's in a league of his own money-wise...
Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Les Miles, Charlie Weis, and I think Tressel all make more than he does. They don't get 'moneybags' attached to their names lol

Saban has verbally and publicly committed himself to several organizations. He forgets his word once the money is shown. I'm fairly certain that i've been in plenty of arguments about this topic. Do a search. Let's keep this thread clean, shall we? :)

I've read quotes from Meyer saying that ND was a dream job and will remain that (as in not ever become reality)... I heard about the youngest kid graduating also.

I think the UF AD will renegotiate his contract to whatever suits his fancy as long as he is doing this well here. He has stated he doesn't want to be coaching into his 70s and 80s like Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden.

After winning his 2nd NC in 4 years, he is the premier football coach with the premier football team. His stock is HIGH right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see UF renegotiate and for him to get another pay raise.

i was just asking why you called him 'moneybags'. that made me think of scrooge mcduck lol. I don't need to do a search. I'm fairly certain I've been in some pretty interesting arguments about Saban on here as well and I've not seen that nickname used for him yet.

I don't want to seem overly optimistic, but I keep on hearing that Spikes will stay if Tebow does. Now, if he takes a hard look at the money he could make (well, I'm sure he has already), he could easily bolt. But I'm holding out some hope. Percy is 99.9% gone. There's this rumor that the three of them have talked about the Horford/Noah/Brewer shocker of '06, but I just can't see that in football.

That's an appropriate thought. He might go there sooner or later. In the meantime, yep, a pay raise is in order.

Out of the 3, Spikes needs the money the most. His brother is in prison and Spikes wants to give him a fair trial with a good lawyer (not the public one he got) and his mom is working as a janitor at a school next to UF. In his situation, there wouldn't be any question in my mind as to what I would do.

Haha, I understand. Although, i've heard many refer to him as moneybags or something relatively similar. This picture comes to mind.

You need to face the fact that the Chizik hire was a complete sham. Jay Jacobs stated publicly that "the checkbook was open" and Auburn was going to hire the best coach available.

So why hire a loser as a head coach (5-19 at Iowa State)?

The answer, it was all politics. Lowder couldn't wait to get the the power back, he was ready for it in 03 and he just waited it out until Tubbs had a bad season.
The AU program is in such shambles right now they won't be force in the SEC for another 10 years. Get used to mediocrity, you'll be there for a long time.

Yes, USC has a bunch of talent waiting in the wings. I almost forgot, Shareece Wright will be back next year, provided his neck heals up and he doesn't get railroaded by the Colton PD. He's a good cover CB that likes to hit that was starting until he got hurt. Chris Galippo at LB is a kid who will break out next year - you read it here first!

As much as I dislike Notre Dame, I would welcome Urban Meyer taking the helm there. It would bring some luster back to the Trojan-Irish series.

Based on how they finished, as well as returning talent, Florida will undoubtedly, and deservedly, start 2009 #1.
