Well, after lots of looking, talking, and asking, I decided on a Revsound 2x12 cabinet, which just arrived this afternoon. Thirty-eight pounds, which is nice. So far I have only had a chance to play a few scales with my Lull P4 strung with rotosound swing bass strings. Not really boomy, but seems consistent from low D (Detuner on my E string) though high G (octave on the G string). I'll be playing it more this weekend with the band, and will have a full report. Seems really well built. One little thing I like. Unlike most 2x12s, where the drivers are set diagonal, these are alligned vertically (like most 2x10s). David Luke, the builder, prefers it sonically, but also, it will be easier to fit on a small stage, and will project a little higher.
I would talk to Daviid, the builder. He tunes the cab based on the needs of the player. He knew I was a 4 stringer, but played some stuff in drop D, so he tuned the cab with that in mind. It's gonna be fun walking into a gig carrying everything in one trip.
Nice acquisition. These cabs are fantastic. I can't believe they are not better known . You say Revsound and all you get is who is that?
I'll try to get some pics this weekend. But I am loving this cab - moves some serious air. Very clean sound, and responsive to eq. A little on the bright side from what I played before (vintage Trace Elliot). Saturday it is going to band rehearsal, so I will have a full report, butnext gig will be a one-trip load in: bass over oneshoulder, head around my neck, and carrying this 38 pound cab in one hand.
Gave the cab its first test with the jazz band this evening, with Carvin BX-500 head, and my '51 P clone with flats. The response is very even and clean from the low E to the G string octave (as high as I played). So far I am loving this cab. Thursday I am playing with the rock band - higher volume and round wound strings - will report back.
Thanks for the report, Bulldog. I really want to get one of these, plus I owe Dave for getting me my gig. I would be curious how it goes down to B too.
Is your 2X12 a custom job? I just visited Revsounds's website for the first time. No 2X12s listed. Their 2X10 is intriguing, but they don't list an 8 ohm model.
I think the website is going through changes. Better photos on facebook. Mine was not custom, but the210 has been his big seller. I wanted to be able to more more air. And at 38 pounds, why not? Call him with questions - great service. Christmas Eve he was trying to chase down a UPS truck to get my cab shipped. With any cab, he has options, cosmetic and otherwise.
This company is new to me, and now I'm on a quest for knowledge. The website does seem to be incomplete and I'm not on facebook, so I emailed David some questions. Meanwhile, what can any Revsound users here tell me about the cabs? I've watched a couple demo/review videos on youtube (The one with Al Hospers is quite good) and skimmed through a TB search (some mentions, but not a lot of details). What do these cost? How long does it take to get one? Are they efficient? I know Bass Gear reviewed them too. Does anyone have a link to that?
You can also call him - he does return calls. I think the 2x10 starts around $500, and the 2x12 about $750, depending on options (tweeters, tolex, etc.). Default wood is birch, he also uses Okoume, which is lighter. The facebook page has some good detailed demos. Turnaround time is pretty quick, mine was a couple of weeks. I am happy with the response on mine. It was on the bright side to start, with a solid bottom, and can be sculpted with EQ the way you want. Best thing to do is speak to David by phone. It's not a cookie cutter operation. When I told him what I was looking for, he picked drivers and tuned the cab. For the price, he really gives you a lot.
You can just contact him. It's not a big factory operation, each cab is pretty much custom made, though of course he has his standard designs he works from. If you want an 8 ohm 2x10 just ask him to make one.
Thanks. I did email him just today. I'm just going by what info is on the website, which is not a lot.
Thanks for the info, guys. David did return my email after only 2 or 3 days - and said "sorry it took so long"! He says he loves talking gear. And he knows his stuff. Seems like a great guy to work with. I really want to run two stacked cabs at 4 ohms, but ... the 210 isn't available in 8 ohm format because of what Celestion offers in neos. David said he might consider building one with different speakers (I forget which brand). But I would be his guinea pig. Prices are reasonable. The updated website is supposed to be ready to go this weekend. Decisions, decisions.
My suggestion - talk to him. He is willing to work with you. Also consider the 212. It is set up like a 211 (vertically alligned), not much bigger, and sounds huge.
