Nearly no sound coming form the first 2 frets...

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by Terrorstorm, Aug 3, 2005.

  1. hi.
so now I recognized a problem which I never had before.
I put on some new strings on my 5 string and I have the following problem:
there's nearly no sound at all when I play on the first 2 frets on the G, D and A string. just a little bit of a metallic vibrating. no punch at all.
so, what could be the problem. maybe someone else has got this problem

    thanks very much

My guess is that the newer strings are lower in tension than the previous set, and the neck has backbowed so that the strings are choked at the lowest frets. If so, loosening the trussrod a smidge should solve the problem. If you don't know how to do this, don't try it until you learn how. Besides, you might just need to raise the action a bit.

I suppose it's possible that the new strings are much thinner in diameter, so they sit lower in the nut slots, but I doubt that's the case.
