I am thinking of doing a 5 string, but do not plan on making the neck myself. Does anyone know of a place to get a neck-through neck other than Carvin?
Why don't you want to make your own neck? It's alot of fun, 3, 5 and 7 piece necks are easy to carve. I can answer any questions you might have.
You know, that's a good question. I guess I had just been figuring it might not come out as nice as I would want. I am an experienced wood worker, though. I have done cabinetry, furniture, and other types of wood working. (professionally for a time, while also cutting and raising timber-frames) I may be lazy, but probably my biggest questions lie in producing a nice finger board, and setting up a truss rod properly.
I've been using 2 carbon rods 3/16" from dragonplate.com and a 2 way truss rod in my necks. As far as fingerboards go you can order them from lmii.com or allen guitars (not sure what thier web address is). Or by a fret saw from stew mac or lmii. If you have any other questions just ask.
if you were a proffessional cabinet maker, you should be fine with any kind of building processes you will have to use. its really very simple, and fun to see your neck come together
Also with a neck-though you can match your neck woods with your body wing woods, so your bass will have a matching look to it.
Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll start drawing and begin to think about wood - I may need to perouse some technical info on installing truss rods and such. If anyone has some easy sources on that, it would help.
I just dove into it. I figured if I screwed up I would learn from my mistakes. And I have. The more you do for yourself the happier your bass will be..lol..
