Godin Shifter bass. These are discontinued but they pop up on the used market once in a while. I've played one just like this a few times but used only the middle pickup (P-bass nut here). Nice basses though.

That's called the "'60's" locations. But for all Jazz basses that claim the lineage, the neck pickup has never changed (barring manufacturing tolerances). In the 70's, Fender located the bridge pickup marginally closer to the bridge. Today, depending on the model, Fender makes J-basses with both bridge pickup positions.

Something like this - I built it in the 60's for the 60's sound! I was so naive back then - I did't realize that the Hagstrom truss rod adjustment was at the bottom of the neck and blocked by the mudbucker! Thankfully the Hagstrom necks are so amazingly solid it has never needed adjsutment - ever!

  5. I recently bought this SG bass, and am still exploring, "The Gibson sound," and how different it is from the "Fender sound."

I still don't have a favorite setting and I'm in no rush to find it.

If you live on the coast, you could use it to alert ships to impending danger?

I got three humbuckers, so my neck pickup is right against 20-fret board. I rarely use it on it's own. I mostly use the middle pickup (it's the growly one), and blend the neck and bridge almost like eq. If I crank the neck bucker, I have to have one of the other pickups cranked to get a sound that appeals to me.

  11. My 68 (with Labella DTFs) is great for recording reggae/dub. Gotta dial the vol on the bass to about 8.5 and turn down the bass on the amp to at least 10:30 or 11:00.

PU at the neck? Mids and highs fade as the deep lows take over. Notes cease to be musical tones (with harmonics) become just low rumble.

I can get that from the PA by just turning up the subwoofer.

But it's a striking looking instrument, with in the body just a hint of the mezzaluna bass.
