Neck & truss rod issues

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by Tao4Now, Sep 16, 2008.

  1. Had no luck posting this in the Luthier section, so I thought I'd try here. This is the neck of an '89 Fender P Plus.

Truss rod turns, but won't adjust. It looks like this piece is beginning to extrude from the truss socket:

Does the headstock end of the truss rod push against this thing? If so, that may be why I can't get any tension on the truss rod, as it's trying to vacate the neck.

How to repair? The rod is dual-adjust.

Yikes, I'd take that baby to a very experienced repair tech or luthier. I'm assuming the adjustment nut is actually inside that piece that's extruding out of the truss rod channel.

If the adjustment nut is not inside of that piece, try taking the nut off of the rod, clean and lube the threads, put it back on and try it again.

If you can't remove the adjustment nut yourself, the only option you're left with is gaining access to the whole rod to see what is going on, which is a difficult task.

Like I said, you should probably take her to a repair shop.

I'm not sure, but I think that bass has a double-action truss rod. That means when you loosen the nut (to ADD relief), it doesnt' just loosen, but it actively pushes the neck away from the strings. It's held in place so you can't remove the nut entirely. Because the walnut plug is moving, I'm betting there's a bigger problem inside there.

I'd find a GOOD neck repair person. Someone who has some verifiable experience with working on necks, not just a tech who knows how to do set-ups.

it seams as tho the adjustment nut is in past the plug and by trint to loosen it it backed out while pushing the plug out as well... I would take it to some one that knows and have it checked before you really have a problem
