Over the last month I bought a house and ironically enough soon after I was "let go" from my band. I come to terms with things and will be moving soon so I have sold off a lot of my excess bass gear including my Mesa PH610 cab. Great cab, but to be honest it was a lot more than I needed and the money I got for it was nice. I don't need much because I am just a hobbyist player at this point and actually spending a lot of time I did not have before, because of the band, doing other things in life. I am actually looking at going back to a 410 cabinet. Would be good enough for just jamming with friends whenever, but also would be a good sweet spot if I ever joined another group and we just did some local gigs. I have allowed myself to spend around $200 to possibly $250, so obviously will be going the used route. I would love to get a Mesa 410, however with my stated amount I want to spend there does not seem to be a chance. So I have looked into some used Peavey's (TVX), GK's (GLX, BLX, and found one SBX), Acoustic's and a few SWR Workingman's. I am not looking for the needle in a haystack, just asking for input or opinions on good cabs to look into that fit into both my budget and would sound great with my Peavey Tour 450 amp, but that is also solid and versatile.
Omaha, NE. There have been a couple 410's on my local CL, however I have been too late both times. I have been checking out/monitoring Guitar Center's used section on their site. That is where I found all the above mentioned 410's.
Too bad your so far away, I have a 115 BX and a 410 TVX and an 810 TX just taking up space right now.
Yeah, I would look into that 410 if you were closer. That is a lot of the problem I am running into is location and also if offered the shipping of cabs is usually a pretty penny in itself. Have any opinions on the cabs I did mention above? I noticed the GLX's were in a good abundance on the used section of GC's website. Perhaps for good reason, however would not have a problem picking another up on the cheap as well if I would ever need more than just one 410. Other problem is my local GC never seems to have on the floor or in stock these cabs I would want to try out in person. I hear great things about GK and pretty much all the cabs I listed above, however never played a one of them or have any experience with them. Like I said I am looking for something that will sound good, but is also cheap. I ran across a SWR Workingman's Tower 810 cab as well, it's priced under $300 for an 810 that seems low. However other than already setting myself up for what the future may bring, I feel I don't really need a 810 although it seems like a good deal. Would love to give an Ampeg 410 a try as well, but again most times out of my price range. I hear great things about them as well and from what I have heard they sound great.
the PV cabs are all solid. They are dependable, have great lows, and the mids and highs can be dialed in. They are heavy but they will survive a bomb. I think the real gem in all of it is the 115 cab personally. I would say it is the best over all tone out of the three. The 410 gets louder, and the 810 louder than that.
That's what I have read and figured about Peavey. Heck I can say that about my Peavey head, thing is solid state I get that, however it just always works and performs. I'm looking to stick with a 410 at this point. Any input from you or anyone regarding those GK cabs I mentioned? I'm just trying to find out good options.
Peavey's 410 TVX would be a much better cab than GK's Backline or Goldline series, for sure. With a tight budget, you still don't need to stoop to low end entry level stuff. With so many great used cabs on the market, especially with the Peavey head, a good Peavey 410 is what I'd focus on.
Good to know. I kinda wondered it would make sense to have Peavey amp to Peavey cab since they are the same brand and would possibly seem like they are made for each other in that sense. The two TVX's I have been looking at one look's like an older model and has casters, the other looks like a newer model all black, but without casters. Both of them are $199, and also there is now a Peavey TFX for $119, the picture is a bit fuzzy but It looks alright. I read up and there is not much difference between the TFX and TVX no?
Good 410's used for $250 are common unless you're out in the wilderness. Just be a little patient and you'll no doubt find one pretty soon.
Ah Jimmy and your words of wisdom I assume by good you are making a indirect reference to Ampeg which for $250 or less I would love to pickup a nice SVT410...but feel like I am in the wilderness because I have not found one and have been looking for almost two weeks now.
Well I really wasn't referring to Ampeg but the 410he is good, ya But I do realize they're not the only brand out there so it's all good.
Of course, I was just messing with ya. I have thought about Ampeg actually, however just cannot seem to find a good one in my price range hence looking towards Peavey TVX's and other "cheaper" 410's.
You have to do what you have to in order to keep playing, and it's better than nothing, but I've found it best never to cheap out on the cab if you can help it. Don't have to get the most expensive, but get a decent one and stay away from the lowest tier budget models. Not all budget cabs are bad, but many are just godawful.
Yes, hence my comment on GK's lowest tier models. Peavey, otoh, makes solid, dependable, good sounding stuff at lower prices than the big names. I'd just stay away from anything entry level- and +1 to Jimmy's "don't skimp on the cabs" comment.
That's what I figured what was being referenced too was the lower entry level GLX and BLX GK models. I know Peavey is often looked at as close to or in that entry level bass gear, however I agree they are generally very solid and dependable products from what I have owned by them and heard and read. I have learned to not skimp, but also I hope to find something good at a budget price.
Well, your situation may kinda suck at the moment, but you'll live through it so don't worry. Agreed, the Peavey is the best of what you listed. The Swr goliath and the Ampegs are good if you find one. Nemesis is another I've been happy with as far as lower cost gear. Every bit as good as the Eden stuff if that's your thing, but always much less cash outlay. Anyway, good luck, and if you run across anything that might be a deal, post it. Somebody here will have owned or played one.
Oh, and if you run across any "Tubeworks" stuff, give it a try. Obscure nowdays, company defunct, not a lot of people know what they are, always cheap, but made some good stuff. I still keep one of their amps....still sounds great.
