My SVT 4 Pro took a dump yesterday during practice and I could use some advice in determining how to replace it. I run the SVT 4 mono bridged (1600 watts, I believe) through an Ampeg 810 cab. I do not like the tone of the SVT 4 so for the last couple years I've been running a rackmount SansAmp through the effects loop. I could be wrong, but my understanding has always been that this overrides the preamp in the SVT 4 so it's basically just a power amp. I'm looking at amps and am leaning towards the SVT Classic, but it occurred to me that a much cheaper option may be to just buy a strong power amp, since that seems like it would essentially be the same setup I already had. After a short search, I found the Crown XLI1500 which I believe will do the job. I'm an experienced player, but have never used a separate pre/power amp setup before. Do you guys think I'm on to something with this setup? Am I missing something that makes this not such a great idea? Any recommendations on good power amps if that's the way to go? Thanks!
