What are the growliest pickups for a Fender Jazz? (grrr baby yeah!)

I'm tryin to aim for the growl that a Musicman has (since I can't afford one)

  2. you can always drop a J-Retro preamp and keep the stock pickups...or you can put Bartolini pickups in there.

the J-Retro will be a better, more costly improvement, though.

  3. thats just what i did, j-retro and bartolinis, and for the growl factor? lemme put it this way..

me and the guitar tech decided to call my bass "Tony the Tiger"

  4. What does a J-retro run for these days?

ps: The nastiest (good nasty that is!) combination I've tried out with a J-Retro was in the MIM Jazz I sold to Dave Siff with a J-Retro-01 with a set of DiMarzio DP-123 pickups.

  8. I have a Retro with Bartolini 9W4J's....phewwww, this thing growls like nothing you could ever imagine. These Bartolini's growl like no other Bart's.
