Hello everyone. I am in the market for a new P-Bass. I have been looking for several models and have come up with these choices: Fender Roger Waters P-Bass: I love the look of the bass, but dislike the old fashioned truss rod adjuster and the fact that the bass has no graphite rods in the neck. Lakland Skyline 44-64 P-Bass: I really like the look of these basses as well, but I dislike the price for a overseas made Lakland. Also, I have never played one of these before, so I don't know how it feels or sounds. It has specs similar to the Roger Waters P-Bass in terms of neck with at the nut (1.75). Carvin PB4: I'm not to crazy on the look of these basses, but I heard they are tremendous value for money. I also dislike the jazz like neck width. I've owned a PB5 P/J Bass before and was not crazy of the tone of the jazz bass pickup. The P pickup sounds good though with it being alot brighter than the standard Fender P-Bass pickup. I like the price as well. I can get one built with the same look on the Waters P-Bass for around $970. What do you guys think?
Any help would be great guys. I am trying to figure out which one I want so I can get it ordered within a next couple of weeks.
The build quality and sound on the Indonesian passive Laklands is good, in my experience. I haven't played the others on your list.
Graphite rods - all they do is add stiffness to the neck. This can help to avoid warped necks and can help to reduce seasonal truss rod adjustments. They do little to eliminate dead spots (which are related to mass, not stiffness). Personally, I'd prefer a neck with a double acting truss rod and no bars (G&L) than one with a traditional single action truss rod and graphite bars. I had a Lakland 55-01 for a while. Very nice bass for the price. But if I'm gonna spend serious money on a bass I prefer it be made in the USA for social / political reasons. But that is pretty much off-topic. Carvin necks are great BUT they are very shallow. I dislike them for that reason. The ones I've had have been really, really good bases. Solid, sounded great. Great ergonomics. In fact, I'm gonna go shop on their web page right now to see how much my next (Stingray-clone) bass would cost. I personally am playing the p-bass-to-end-all-GAS. It is a Warmoth 32" scale. Less than 7 lbs, great tone, very easy to play. Love love love.
The neck on my MIM '50s Classic Precision is almost the same as the Roger Waters Precision, and I don't find the truss rod adjustment to be a problem. I live in a coastal town with fairly big swings in temperature/humidity, and I've only had to adjust the truss rod once in the seven or eight years I've owned the instrument.
Well I've owned 2 of the upper MIM P basses with the truss rod in the heel position. A MIM 50's Classic and a Nate Mendel P Bass. I bought each used, sight unseen and the action on both were horrible and no matter what I did (neck shim, multiple adjustments, and lowering the saddles), I could not get either of the basses to play right. The 50's Classic came from a fellow TBer from California and the truss rod was very very tight. So I am skeptical about getting the Roger Waters P Bass for only that reason, but I plan on buying new from Sweetwater so hopefully I will not have that problem.
Yeah the PB5 that owned had a very Ibanez like neck as far as shallowness goes. The string spacing was pretty wide though. The bass was great, but for one I am not a five string player and two I hated the way the jazz pickup sounded IMO. The P-Bass pickup sounded nice, but different than a Fender Pickup. The price is the big reason I like the Carvin only $975ish to get a new custom USA made bass is a great deal!
I do like the looks of the bass. It's a sleek very sexy looking bass. I could build a Carvin like that, but it would not look, sound, or feel the same.
Plus I really don't like the vintage frets and the new neck profile on the new American Pro P-Basses.
Fender. I bought a Lakland Skyline that was so poorly made I sent it back to Sweetwater within an hour of opening it.
55-02 Deluxe, spalted maple/maple board - Gap in the neck pocket - 1/2" crack in the finish - One of the pickups was screwed in so tightly that the plastic near the screw had cracked off - D-string tuner was installed on an angle
