Need help choosing my new amp!!

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by mberlin74, Apr 5, 2009.

  1. I have an Ampeg SVT 1540 HE speaker cabinet with 1x15 and 4x10. It is rated Full at 400 watts @ 8 ohms. I am stuck between choosing the Ampeg SVT 450H and the Markbass LMII or LMIII(this is just an updated LMII). Both amps sound great and both have strengths and weaknesses to my ears. I am relatively new to the bass world and have to admit that I am a little confused when it comes to power handling, ohms, impedance, load etc. I read a great post on this site from IronMike trying to explain it all but I am still a little lost. I have included links to both amps and was hoping that some of the members out there could help steer me towards the best suited amp power wise, to my cabinet. Thanks

  2. the links should all work now!

    Hi mberlin74.

Ampeg's current parent company, LOUD Technologies, is in deep trouble. (You can read about it here.) If one bought a new 'peg to-day, one may have trouble getting it repaired to-morrow.

In addition, the consensus here on TalkBass is that quality control in the manufacture of newer Ampeg bass amps has lapsed somewhat.

In contrast, Markbass' prospects appear to be quite bright. I expect that Markies will continue to thrive in the bass amp marketplace.

If you have your heart & ears set on getting an Ampeg amp, then buying an older U.S. made 'peg would be worth looking at.

You can ask these folks about this: 'Official Ampeg Club!'
