Ok, first off, just registered here, longtime lurker tho. I've gained quite a bit of insight here so I figure this would be the best place to ask. Currently playing an Aguilar AG500SC, which is nice and has great tone, the only problem is its not the tone I want. I do a lot of hard rock and power/prog metal and really dig a ballsy tube-driven sound. Played on an SVT-CL at the local GC and found a tone close to what I like. That said tho, it's a lil outta my price range at the moment and haven't seen any used ones that are. Been searching the net and have found what I feel are 3 options. I'm watching an older SVT2PRO on ebay that would probably be my first option. If that doesn't pan out, there were a couple of SVP-PRO preamps that were really decently priced to where I could probably pick up a good power amp. I figure that would be just as good as the SVT2PRO, right? And the 3rd, and kinda wildcard option, an EBS TD650 that's within my budget. I've heard nothing but great things bout EBS amps and have demoed a couple pedals too. It's got tube driven OD which sounds right up my alley and plenty of power behind it. My question is to anyone who's played on the EBS, is it capable of such sounds? Any and every opinion right now would be very helpful. Don't have a local EBS dealer so actually playing one is out of the question. My brain is sayin Ampeg because I know what it is capable of, but curiousity is telling me EBS.
ebs is and always has been kind of an under dog. but I think thet kick ass, see if you can find one with a good warranty, also have you looked a the fender bassman 300, 300 all tube watts, couple o gadgets and that sig fender tone, personaly, i see ampeg the same way guitarists see marshall, good if not great, but its been done every which way with every cab possible and every sound produceable 20 years before you were born, btw Im 21 and assuming you about the same, and I dont really like either ampeg or marshal, so maybe Im biast, but they just sound like bass, good bass, but just bass, little to no, personalness, youll end up sounding exactly like 300 other famous players, but if thatsa what your hearts set on rock on
Yeah, I'm 24, so bout the same. But yeah, I feel ya on the Ampeg to Marshall analogy. That's what kinda leans me toward the EBS. If it can produce some of the same type of growling ballsy overdrives similar to or better than the SVT then I'm all over it. Fender bass gear has never really impressed me too much, tho honestly never got to play on much, only what we carried when I worked at GC.
do me a favor get the ebs, and tell me how it sounds cuz I been looking into them too j/k man, do what feels right, but my votes for going out on a limb
Yeah, more and more I think I want to go the EBS route. My only concern is I've read a lot that it's very hifi, and also read that it gets pretty dirty too. All I need to know is, can it rock out? Anyone with hands-on experience that can answer that?
