Need help ID'ing a P- Highway or Am Vintage?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Skyblue977, Apr 11, 2009.

  1. I need (want) to add a P to the stable. I'm looking at this on crap bay. Can anybody tell me if it's a Highway 1 or and Am Vintage or Std? The seller claims he does not know.

I am intrested to know about this as well, mainly the possible "how can we tell?" part for future reference.

I am not an expert, not even a newbie, but body seems to be 3 piece.

American Standard has a string-thru body and deluxe tuners.
(you can change tuners, but it's hard to hide the string-thru holes)
A 62 Reissue Precision has a serial number on the neck plate that starts with "V", plus lots more.

Looks like a highway one with a few aesthetic mods. Finish looks like the satin nitro does when you buff or polish it up. The burst looks like a Hwy 1 as well. I may be wrong though.
  6. The '62 Vintage would also have the truss rod agjustment at the heel of the neck, not at the headstock.

I've been doing some Googling, and the Hwy 1 3TSB did not come with a tort guard or ashtrays. Of course they may have been added by a previous owner.

    Definitly a Highway one.

62 ReIssue nor an American Series would have the skunk stripe neck either.

That's a dolled up Highway one, made in 2003.

    Pre-upgrade HWY1.

You can tell by the tuners (same used for MIM)
  10. Thanks All, I'll give it a miss then.

Different logos, neck tint, sunburst pattern, tort pickguard, tuners, serial number (62 RI's start with a V), serial number location, neck plate, skunk stripe, and if I'm not mistaken, different sized frets.

    Old Highway 1.
