Hi all, I'm new to 35" scale basses and would like to get some info on available strings for my new Peavey Cirrus Redwood 5-string. I know that Peavey Cirrus 5XL and Stainless Steel 5XLS will fit, but I've never used Peavey strings. I'm sure that any D'Addario "Super Long Scale" strings will fit as well, but does anyone know what other strings will work with a 35" scale, such as Dean Markley and Rotosound (my old favorites)? As you can imagine, I don't want to waste money on strings that don't fit. Any info you have would be a great help! Also, anyone who plays a Cirrus and has an opinion on the BEST SOUNDING strings for this bass please let me know too!!! Thank, Dave
You are correct on the D'Addarios. I put the XL170SL 4 string sets with a matching extra .035 C and .120 or .125 B on my Cirrus 6. I order all these in bulk (but you can order individually) from JustStrings.Com .
Anything that says extra long scale will do fine. I've been stringing mine with LaBella Slappers for a couple years and I've been happy with the results.
The Cirrus strings are good strings, if you like nickels. The best sounding strings I have found for my Cirrus are Dean Markley SR2000's. If you like bright strings, these are about the brightest. I love them!
I personally hated the peavey strings on my Cirrus 5 string. i ended up putting GHS pressurewounds on it but I had to cut a little bit of the wrapping off in order to make up for the scale length. Sounds exceptional. I may try some elixirs sometime though just to see how they sound/last.
Using DR Fatbeams on my Cirrus 4. Don't see why the 5 string set wouldn't work for you, and they're great strings.
Thanks for all the posts! I found out that the Rotosound set that fits the Cirrus is the RS665EL, but for some reason that set is not on their website. I had to call them, but they were very helpful. They said if you can't find this set at your local dealer you can order them online at juststrings.com. RotoSound Swing Bass 5 String Extra Long Scale, .045 - .130 $31.07 Dave
I think you can't beat a Cirrus with Elixirs. I love that they're still bright but with reduced fret noise.....
