im in the process of building my first bass! but im new to the whole different types of wood and all that stuff. im gettin a j bass replacement body, but not sure what wood i should get. my cousin has an alder body which i find to be nice but he recommend me getting a swamp ash body. what are the pros/cons of the swamp ash body and what are some other good tone woods that you guys recommend or use? if it helps i like to play alot of chili peppers, tool, primus, hendrix and so on, im running bartalini passive pickups its gonna be a j bass at neck position and a music man in its "sweet spot". thanks for the help guys
with barts in there the differences between alder and ash are going to be minute. I think the biggest deciding factor would be if you were doing a transparent or natural finish ash would be a better choice for its distinctive grain. Both are light weight and good tone woods, ash has more low end punch and clear highs where as alder seems to be a "jack of all trades" type of wood. It still has solid lows and bright highs but has alot more mellow quality and more defined midrange.
