NEED HELP WITH SOUND OF BASS

when i plug my bass into my amp it makes a dull buzzing noise, when i actually touch the strings with my fingers the sound gets a great deal louder. i recently got it rewired as my friend broke the wires on the pickup and it has only been mucking up since then. i have tried new leads. could anyone help at all? is there a simple way to fix it or will i have to take it back to the shop?
