    How often do you gig?

What size of venue do you play?

What style of music do you perform?

What kind of bass do you play?

Knowing all this will help us give you better advice.

    :D

It's going to be very hard to find any amp that can gig at more than jazz volume levels or at a mid to large venue, especially if its all new.

Look local used. Try to get at least a 410 or possibly a 210 with a 115 or even a 212. Power this with about 200 watts minimum. Definately look used. Peavey is probabally the best choice for a used head.

If I were you and was absolutely positively sure that I would not in any way be able to raise a little more cash I would look at

    This Head (click here)

    and

    This cab (click here)

Shipping I believe would be free.

    or

    This head

    Hartke Model 1400 Amp Head w/S.S. Preamp & 140 Watts - $149.00

    and this cab

    Hartke Transporter 115TP Speaker Cab. (8 ohm) w/1X15" Aluminum Speaker - $199.00

    from Bass NW + s&h.

For $400 you can get a decent cab or head but it's hard to get both at that price.

Buy an extension cab if possible.

Just a few more bucks would definitely make a difference.

    Check out this link.

And go to the bass cabinets page. You will find good deals on head/cab packages.

For the smallest head/cab package you only need to spend $445 and that includes shipping. But it is also a small head and 112 cab. Great for low volume rehearsal or very small gigs.

But it only gets better from there (except for your pocket book!).

$600 will buy you a decent rig.

Are you looking for an amp and a cab? I see that you asked for an amp, but others are also suggesting cabs.

If it is a amp only, $400 will get you a loud, good quality used GK amp.
