hey all. i have a fender p bass and latey the output seems kinda "weak". i've had it for about 7 years and play it constantly and violently. i don't know if it's a pickup problem or maybe i need to change cables (i've had those for a while too and they're kinda cheap). who knows. anyone know what the problem might be? do pickups need changing every once in a while? and if so, how do you know when you have to change them??

    FWIW:

You can go thru a lot of grief trying to find pups with a tone you like. Nobody I know has played a bass for 7 years that hasn't met their needs to a T. We all need something different from time to time. I wouldn't make any changes to a bass I'd played for 7 years that I couldn't return to it's previous state.

Perhaps a Spinal Tap amp with volume that goes to 11.
