I have a chance to buy a mid 80's MIJ Squire jazz bass. It'll br dropped off tomorrow.

I have seen it before. Played it before. It's in excellent shape.

I need some opinions from the knowledgeable folk on what it's worth today. I recall reading about serial numbers starting with "JV" meaning something. I haven't seen the serial numbers to validate.

So....any ideas on price and second, where can I validate the vinatge by serial number?

    Thanks

IMHO, you are probably talking about an instrument that has no intrinsic value-added due to it's age. I would evaluate it as I would any other used Squier, which IMHO means we are probably well below $150, depending on condition, playability, tone, case, appeal, etc.

Lest we forget, brand new Vintage Modified Squier Jazzes are going for ~$250.
