So I've used most of the major brand amps out there Ampeg, GK, Genz Benz, SWR, Peavy, etc. I'm pretty good at dialing in good tone on any decent amp. For the last 5 years I've reached a semi pro level playing about 10-15 gigs a month. I've used your standard SVT-CL 810 combo for most that time then switched to the new V4-B/810av cab because it seemed to be the cool thing to do. (Plus it made the sound guys happier) I've always seemed to go with whatever mainstream players are going with. I'm not complaining one bit, I've never been disappointed. (I've always had flagship models 2001RB, SM900, GBE1200, SVTCl). Now I'm seeing Aguilar DB750/1 and DB series cabs really start to make their way into the light. Naturally my buying bone starts acting up. I'm looking at getting a DB751 and DB412. Even tho I'm happy with my current rig, can anyone see any merit in keeping up with "what's cool". Just any feedback would be awesome before dumping stupid money into an Aguilar rig.
It happens with the cross-postings...that's OK...I'm not one to stand on ceremony... I've played the DB751 and DB410 cabs. Thought the head was very nice, didn't care for the cabs...too dark with the tweeter turned off. Some have told me I'd like the GS cabs better, but they don't look as good as the DB cabs IMHO. I don't think it's unfair to say it has a strong Ampeg influence...the DB751 reminds me of the SVT 4 Pro in many ways, and Dave Boonshoft spent a lot of time with an SVT/810 in bands when he was younger. Would I off a V4B reissue to get one? Certainly not The V4B is my workhorse amp these days, and nothing beats a good tube amp IMHO. But other than me not liking the lack of treble in the cabs with the tweeter turned off, Aguilar does make a nice product.
I've been thinking of going the 412 route myself and putting together a GK rig with the 1001rb and two of their 212s, but something about the fender super bassman speaks to me. If I did that Id get their matching 610 and a 115. I dunno. Need some cash then Ill try them both
don't keep the 6x10 and the 1x15 in the same room.....the mixed driver police will swoop down on you without mercy!
I dont get how its such a religious thing. My SWR cabs mix and match beautifully and I have an ampeg cab (1528) that's a 15, two 8s, and a tweeter all in one cab. Its a crazy well engineered cab and it sounds great. But obviously I wrong about that cause, you know, mixed drivers
I own a DB 751 with a DB410, and I don't find it to be too dark at all. Then again I never turn the tweeter completely off. Usually I play my ash/maple P Bass w/flatwounds thru this rig, and it kills IMHO.
The argument is misunderstood. It's about mixing different cabs, with the same size drivers or not, and the possible phasing or overpowering issues that can result. In the journey to becoming a TB orthodoxy the subtler parts of the argument are sometimes forgotten and all that is remembered or claimed are that cabs with different speaker sizes to one another are bad. A good sounding cab is a good sounding cab no matter how it was engineered, even though some people will not admit this, just like some people will not admit that there are sound scientific reasons for a cab to sound good even if not easily understood. Two cabs that sound good together sound good together, though it might be a lot more difficult to get the desired results in different rooms.
I could see you saying that because I thought the cab sounded good with the tweeter on, but as you said, you DO leave the tweeter on. Even if it's a little on, it's on. But I really don't care for anything upwards of 5k, and the tweeter goes way higher, but I at least want to hear 4 or 5k out of a cab without the tweet on. And once I turned the tweet off, it sounded more like 2 or 3k. The original question didn't mention mixing cabs at all.
Hmmmm, well I'm not that technical, but somewhere I read that turning the tweeter completley off somehow burns it out so I usually run it at 1/4 or less. Any more than that, and it starts to sound brittle to my ears. I think the bass itself makes a big difference too. The ash/maple combo seems to cut better than my alder/rosewood P bass did..
The 751 is a great head but bulky and pretty heavy. In any case, I personally went from a 410 to 2 x 210 NEO cabs. Best gear decision I have made. One light cab for small gigs and two light cabs for large gigs.
"Need some cents knocked into me in the amp department" Is this just your way of saying "penny for your thoughts"? Otherwise it makes no sense.
I'm with you- SWR son of bertha (1x15) with a SWR goliath jr (2x10) on top, and I love the tone........I guess we didn't get the memo!
I thought maybe this was a thread about begging for donations for the purchase of a new amp. Then I saw he was talking about the 751, and I KNEW it was a thread about begging for donations of a new amp!
There was a good thread on this a week or two ago, someone posted some papers a dude wrote about mixing driver sizes, and I arrived at a similar conclusion. My swr stuff is gonna match cause their speakers all had similar specs
