EYyy everyone, I'm lookin for some funky bands here that I can start listening to. I like RHCP alot and also like the porn music style of funk, and I wouldn't mind oldschool funk either ;-)

Any and all input is appreciated.

Next time you're in Barnes & Noble or Borders-
Pick up(or browse through) DaveThompson's Funk. That should be enough to keep you busy for awhile.
Thompson starts with "Pre-Funk", goes into "Classic Funk", then "Disco Funk", & ends with "The New School".
You already like RHCP, right? Well, you should already know who they liked-
...people like George Clinton(P-Funk), Boosty, Sly & The Family Stone, & The Meters.

If you like Sly, check out Graham Central Station's FIRST album & Earth, Wind, & Fire's FIRST album...both are kinda similiar; both came out pretty soon after The Family Stone bid adeiu.

    Mandrill is a MUST check-out! ;)

    "New School Funk"?
Check out The Brand New Heavies, Groove Collective, Liquid Soul, Galactic, etc

    Acid Funk?
Check out Defunkt, Screaming Headless Torsos, Lester Bowie, Miles Davis(w/ Marcus Miller/Mike Stern), Fishbone, etc
  4. No you don't. It's just a phase you're going through...

On the Mandrill tip, check out "Peck Ya Neck"... it's the later Mandrill lineup (late 70's;)) and they're playing kazoos;). I let a friend hear it tonight, somehow he missed it back in the day.

Also the 40th Anniversary James Brown CD set.

Check AllMusicGuide.com. Click on styles under the search panel and type funk. You'll be shown three styles, "Funk", "Funk Metal" and "Funky Breaks."

Click on "Funk" and you'll be shown a treasure chest of information, best known bands and stars from Stevie Wonder, James Brown, George Clinton to numerous others.

To learn even more, you can click on every artist mentioned.

All Music Guide is frequently my first stop when I want to know more about a genre of music.

  9. "Check your head" and "Ill comunication" with Beasty Boys.
They're not extremely good technically, but BOY they've got the Groove...

How about Jamiroquai? They seem to have evrything you're looking for, and the bass is superb. Try digging out 'Emergency On Planet Earth', their debut.

I knew James Brown would be mentioned and Sly. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Isley's mentioned. However, nobody mentioned The Meters. Get thyself some Meters and find out what southern, 'Nawlin's Funk sounds like. Hot and greazey dripping with soul. Yummy.

For some it can be!!! Tell me which funk bands are cool so I can talk about them without actually listening to them.
For all one would know, we could say "listen to bands like Boris and Natasha, Angry Gerbils, and the Broomall Vegan Uprising. Hot stuff!" And the dude would be off to tell everyone how he's all into them.

    Just a weird thought.

    For real though...
Stick with the Godfather...he'll keep ya busy for a while!!!
  15. Funk isnt a phase, its a state of mind

No, I don't think its a phase, more of an obsession.

And if you think that I just wanna know the names of these bands so I can look cool in front of my friends, your wrong. None of my friends like funk, and are mostly into alternative and rock. If I were to mention a band like mandrill to them, they'd look at me like an idiot and say nothing.

I just wanna know some more funky bands so I can listen to them for myself, not so I can brag about them to others.
  17. What about P-funk?

    Hell Yeah!

and that word is Parliment - sure a few folks already said P-funk...but if your not familiar with funk you might not know what the heck that is - also check out (William) Bootsy Collins - the album: The One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away - it changed my life....oh, and The Ohio Players....
  19. Scope George Porter Jr.'s lines with the Best of The Meters. So funky you can smell it.
