a pianist to be specific ;)

There's a girl wanting to hear me, but I have no material to let her hear, nor do I know what would be appropriate.

I like her music and want to play with her, but I don't think "I can play YYZ - look!" is going to work with her caliber of music.
Think Alicia Keys sans the R&B/soul giving Norah Jones lessons.

    Any thoughts?

Find a couple of pieces of music she likes playing and practice at home with this music. I'm sure you can figure out something that will fit.

Remember, just don't overplay. Keep it simple and all will be good.
  4. I suppose you could always ask her what kinda tunes she might want to hear and any examples. You could always say, "I can play a number of tunes, I just want to know what would suit your music best so you can hear what you're looking for." I don't know how true that is, but it might cover up that you don't know what to play.

I like this piece of advice.
  5. I know referring to her as a "chick" won't impress her. :smug:

beyond that, just sit down and play along with her and see if it sticks. Improv is a good source of showing ability.

    Good luck.

If the goal is to play with her, I strongly advise asking her directly what songs she likes to play or is interested in playing. Learn those. Of course you can jam on whatever comes up, but if you want to impress her, the best way is to show her you can play what she likes/wants to play.

Throw in a crack about your "twelve inch pianist." That's a guaranteed in. :)

So are you trying to impress this girl, or play along with her, or get a gig? I'm confused. If you want to impress her and she's a classical pianist, why not whip out some Bach Cello Suites. It was working wonders for me the other day with this violinist girl!

Oh yeah, and I don't date girls that have a pianist so I can't help you there.

    How to impress a chick?

Well, I got two ways; the first is not to refer to her as a "chick" and the second is to not post about it on the internet.

    Here's another idea:

    Impress her with your mind.
