It looks rather like the bass equivalent of the Gittler Guitar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gittler_guitar
I have a friend who is a Marine Biologist who has a similar instrument that they use to communicate with Whales under water. Do a search on Hydrophone. They make underwater piezo pickups.
I'd play it in my tub with my toy plastic boats and rubber ducky. I wonder--if you get GAS underwater, does it make bubbles?
Not quite the same as the original posting; maybe more affordable... Don't know why I'm stumbling across weird basses tonight. =wr=
"This instrument was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art and will be available for viewing in early 2009" bah...what a waste.
