Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help out a newb today. I picked up a second hand ampeg svt 4 pro for a steal of a price but after bringing it home and taking it to rehearsal I have no idea how to use it to max potential. I currently have it running through power amp a into a 800w ampeg PF cab at the practice room and the owner of the studio where we rehearse said I'm only using quarter of the amp but he doesn't know how to set them up. My old head was a ampeg PF 500 so it was super simple to plug in and play. For gigging I have a Hartke hydrive 4x10 1000w cab and a hartke 1x15 500w cab. Any advice would be amazing thank you.

Damn. My head didn't come with the mono bridge cable and these things dont look like they're easy to buy!

Looks like you just flip the switch to Mono/Bridge and then use a standard 1+1- to 1+1- speakon cable from the Mono/Bridge output to your cabs

Depends which year yours was built, new models use a standard 1+/1- while the older version is 1+/2+ which is super easy to do with a 4 pole Neutrik brand speakon end.

Either version is clearly stated under the bridge output as to which wiring to use.

I have a 2001 model and my only advice is to run the input gain toward the high side i.e.- between noon and 3 o'clock:thumbsup:

    In any mode

I wouldnt immediately jump into the bridge mode unless you find you cant get enough volume. I prefer to run two cabs each into its own "side".

Page 7 has your answer, Bi-Amp Highs / Lows. You end up splitting the power 600 per side and you can use the frequency control knob for the crossover point, effectivly splitting hi and low frequencies.

Had to edit, my first response was wrong...doh. I used to have this amp and Bi-Amping always got me a killer tone (with a DBX160a compressor).

You don't need to run it to its full potential to get the best out of it. All you have to do is turn the gain up until just before it starts to distort. And watch your volume and don't trust the numbers because it can blow speakers!

Be very mindful of the loads (impedance) you are pushing. Make sure the mono bridge switch is in the correct position before you turn it on. I smoked one of these amps like that.

Listen to Jimmy on this one. Unless you're playing a large concert venue with virtually no PA support; there is no reason to run this amp at full wattage. Running your cabs in series or parallel is plenty enough. The 4 pro was designed to give you performance flexibility...most of it you'll never need.

Just have the peace of mind that you have a professional head that can be used for just about anything you throw at it. (Mono-bridge, Bi-amp single, bi-amp dual, stereo DI, cross over, 2 ohm load, dual tuner...). ;)

That's for sure! That is the one Ampeg head I've always wanted but never got around to getting.

Wouldn't thst result in undesired input level distortion? On my 2PRO, I run the master all the way up, use the input gain as a 'volume' and use the drive control (along with how I attack the strings) as means of controlling distortion- and often I like to get some crunch out of it.

edit: I just noticed the 4PRO doesn't have the drive control. Are there thubes in this amp's preamp section?

We use one of these at church thru an Ampeg 4x10-not sure which one. I’ll need to confirm the specs on the cab

    Thanks for posting this

I played through it today and at first thought my bass was playing up as the amp was really quiet. To get a decent volume I had to crank the gain near max and the volume (this is on power amp A not mono bridge) and the limiter kept flashing. Before blaming the bass I swapped the svt 4 pro to a svt classic which is at our rehearsal space and the bass was blaring at noon with gain and master, 3x the volume of the svt 4 pro. These were played through a ampeg 6x10 cab. Before I went I set up the svt 4 pro in mono bridge mode and while there was a noticable volume boost I still had to crank the gain and master way past noon. So what could it be? A blown tube? Dodgy head? Thanks for all the replys tho guys, I wanna get this head blaring! I set up the mono bridge with a standered speaker cable so could that be the cause of the low volume? I'm not sure what year the head is but it looks brand new

Last question, what would be the best way to set up the svt 4 pro with the 8ohm hartke 4x10 1000w hydrive?
